Scientific models saved lives from Harvey and Irma. They can from climate change too
The Guardian ^ | September 18, 2017 | by Dana Nuccitelli

Climate models have an even better track record than the weather models that saved lives in Texas and Florida.

The impacts of hurricanes Harvey and Irma were blunted because we saw them coming. Weather models accurately predicted the hurricane paths and anticipated their extreme intensities days in advance. This allowed millions of Floridians to evacuate the state, sparing countless lives.

Although they focus on much different timescales and resolutions, climate and weather models are based on the same core physics.

Millions of people watched the evolution of the model forecasts for hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and made important decisions based on those forecasts. People trusted the models, and their trust proved to be well placed, as the model predictions were accurate.

And climate models have an even better track record.

Scientific models saved countless lives from Harvey and Irma because we listened and acted. They can also save countless lives from climate change if we listen and take action to slow global warming. Or we can listen to the conspiracy theorists, ignore the scientists and their models, and suffer the consequences while the Rush Limbaughs of the world flee in their private jets to higher ground.

“We need to act on model warnings about climate change too
There are some exceptions. The bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, which now includes 28 House Republicans, acknowledged the impacts climate change is having on disasters like Harvey and Irma. We need more conservatives to accept reality and join their ranks.”

Makes you want to throw up.

Now, that’s just a lie.

That was really funny

It is OK cut off trumps head, but you can't add a golf shot to an actual video of a drunken HilLIARy.

They can also save countless lives from climate change if we listen and take action to slow global warming.

First we need to take action to slow hurricanes, then we can set larger goals such as changing the entire global climate.

Texas did not have that much of a warning. Harvey was pretty close to the coast before there was an alert that it was strengthening. Otherwise the cruise ships wouldn’t have been leaving Galveston until the day before landfall.

People saved people. Models are only as accurate as the last model. They keep trumpeting the Euro model. It was horribly wrong. The US model was far more accurate. Especially, in Irmas case.

"Climate models have an even better track record than the weather models that saved lives in Texas and Florida."

Better track record of what? I don't know of single computer generated model which has provided any predictability. They have all fallen short. Back in the 80's Al Gore's "Earth in the Balance" flat out stated that Florida would be under water right now.

Dana, you ignorant nut, the Atmosphere is a chaotic system. Time passage is significant in the power of prediction.

The impacts of hurricanes Harvey and Irma were blunted because we saw them coming.

They were able to predict where they would hit with 90% certainty within about a 300 mile area two days before they hit.

Now try predicting the weather 100 years from now.

Hedy Lamarr was a rare case of being both a ‘scientist’ and a model.

But they have been CONSISTENTLY wrong! Where else can you find such perfect consistency?

Nonsense. Seeing a hurricane from a satellite is like seeing a car 1/2 mile away, and predicting it will pass you within the next 60 seconds.

Climate modeling is like watching cars on a Dallas Freeway and trying to predict the next airplane crash in Spain.

Climate models did not save anybody...? The Climate research piranhas drain away needed resources from research for improving daily weather models.
