Credit Karma says it will offer credit monitoring for Equifax following this month's huge breach
techcrunch via yahoo ^ | 09/15/2017 | Matthew Lynley

Credit Karma said it will add Equifax to its credit monitoring service as part of its free product, which proactively notifies members of significant changes to their credit report.

It includes a whole suite of notifications for significant changes in credit queries, such as opening new accounts, a change in the status of an account, new personal information or a hard inquiry or application for credit. You'll probably find most of this in some other credit monitoring services, but Credit Karma is now looking to offer it for free as it looks to create a more simple tool for consumers to check and monitor their credit scores.

This is important following the massive Equifax breach earlier this month which included sensitive information for 143 million consumers. That breach included sensitive data like Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and potentially driver license numbers. It's a potential goldmine for potential identity theft or fraud, which has placed companies and consumers on heightened alert.

In exchange for indemnifying them?

Yeah, free.

These companies make BILLIONS ripping off our privacy and snooping on us - and when they are hacked, they’re happy to sell us identity insurance.

What a bunch of crooks.

PS The actual "free" credit report is annualcreditreport.com

You may request a full credit report once a year from each of the Big 3 with no cost and no impact to your credit score. Many people space them out at 4 months intervals to provide more granularity to their monitoring.

I think that applied to the free service Equifax offered after their breach. Does anyone know if this Credit Karma offer has any hidden strings attached?

You have a point, I misread that it was creditkarma offering the free service, which I’m sure has some value to them in any case. I won’t let Equifax off the hook at all.

I did the 90 day fraud alert while the damage is sorted out. I'll probably go with the credit freeze versus credit monitoring in the near future. Equifax can FOAD..

Do you know if it is once every calendar year? Or once every 12 months? If it is calendar year, I could run all three today, then repeat every 4 months starting January 1. If it is every 12 months, I will only run Equifax today.

Thanks for the reminder about these guys. I just put annual reminders in Outlook on Jan 1, May 1, and Sept 1 for the three agencies.

What are you talking about? It was Equifax that had the breech, not CreditKarma. I’ve used them for years, and have been very happy with them.

I placed a 90 day Fraud alert with Equifax when this went down. I got a post card from TransUnion today acknowledging their receipt of the alert. Nothing from Experian yet.

Equifax is offering a free one-year subscription to their credit monitoring service (Trusted ID Premier) for all three major bureaus plus a copy of your Equifax credit report for people who may have been affected.

Go to the link below to see if you are a possible victim of the breach and, if so, to begin the free service enrollment process:

I had assumed per calendar year, never tested the limits.

I read that you should check with annualcreditreport after the Equifax debacle...but choose only one....and then check again in 3 months...and another 3 months....

I checked mine and it seemed very clean...

but how do you PREVENT identity theft?....its better than trying to clean up afterwards...

Note that many credit unions offer this service for free to members, especially if you have several accounts with them.

This situation sucks. The government is 100% responsible for allowing this situation to develop: the amassing of highly-confidential information about individuals against their will in agencies that would never admit that they are ARMS OF THE GOVERNMENT.

Do you know that banks and credit bureaus are regulated to the extent that they are effectively a branch of the government?

This is how its done. They give it a nice-sounding name, like “bank” or “credit bureau” and then they exert total control. Did you know that banks regularly report your financial information to the government?

I had the exact same problem with those jerks. I had no problem accessing the other 2 agencies. It cleared up without me doing anything. I suspect they had to since they authenticate for Obamacare. Exquifax can FOAD.

One year isn’t going to work. Once the info is out there, crooks can wait 15 years or however long before they attack. In fact, that’s more likely!

I cannot get any of the three to work today.
I tried signing up for TrustedIDPremier today and was told they have high demand, please be patient, your email will arrive. So NONE of the four things work for me.

Haven’t tried Credit Karma yet.

FOAD is right!
