Revolt over school's 'outrageous' drug and sex quiz
WND ^ | 09/13/2017 | na

'It's just bizarre. I told my daughter not to turn it in'

Roy High School teacher Candace Thurgood says she has been giving the same “Know Thyself” quiz to students in her “Adult Roles and Financial Literacy” class for years without complaint, but the questionnaire first published in a 1981 Dear Abby column is not playing so well this year.

Thurgood was removed from the classroom and placed on leave from Utah’s Weber School District after parents learned of the class exercise where respondents are asked about their sexual histories and drug and alcohol abuse. The 30 questions are scored to give students points, which are added up on a scale, ranging from “A nerd – just where you should be at your age,” to “Pure as Ivory soap and maybe a fruitcake,” “Passionate but sensible,” “Normal and decent,” “Indecent,” “Headed for serious trouble,” “Already there,” and “Hopeless and condemned.”

“I was in shock. I couldn’t believe something like this was handed out to students,” parent Heather Miller, who called the survey invasive, judgmental and homophobic, told the Salt Lake Tribune.

These were some of the “shock” questions: •Ever gone out with a member of the opposite sex? •Ever been kissed against your will? •Do you smoke pot? •Have you (your girl) ever had an abortion? •Even though you are straight would you go kinky to see what it’s like? •Ever stolen money to buy drugs?

{..snip..}

I dunno. Admitting to have been a bit of a hippy got me average. Maybe the test is too generous?

Example #5,659 why public schools ARE child abuse.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

I never even considered those things in High School.

You never thought about the opposite sex in High School? Do you have a pulse?

I meant to say; “would you go kinky with the same sex just to see”?

My bad.

OH heck yeah. The guys in my class would have gone for the shock value, every time.

That said, there's no such thing as an "anonymous" survey, particularly in a class like this.

Once, the HR weenie at my work asked me why I'd not turned in my anonymous survey. .... Think about it, for a sec. ;-)

Good point.

I would either have answered truthfully or refused to answer at all, but I was a Christian nerd.

What is the purpose of this questionnaire? It is NONE of the teachers’ business.

If I were a student, I would answer everything as if I were as pure as the driven snow.

My kids know that I detest government intrusion and information-gathering. The government is there to provide national security (and, I guess, collect taxes, LOL), and the schools are there to teach the “three Rs.” That is all.

In the 80s they were scandalous

Today swap heroine or oxies for that angel dust. Have you had a threesome.

Cool your jets a bit. This quiz has been given many times. It is anonymous.

The fact that you didn’t engage in risky behaviour says you were and probably still are pretty near perfect

““Miller’s daughter, Olivia, 16, told her mother responding to the quiz was required to get a grade..””

If I were her mom, I would let her flunk...and then she can present the explanation on her college application essay, on freedom or some topic like that.

She could apply to Hillsdale. They’d likely welcome her with open arms. The Ivy League? Her chances are not great. But those schools are overpriced anyway.

Erma Gawd. Speaking openly to teen agers about risky behaviour is not a bad thing

Neither you nor I have any idea what this teacher says or does with an anonymous survey.

I never said I didn’t engage in risky behavior. Just not until my senior year. Pot, some booze, sex, etc. But it’s not important to give students these quizzes. It’s a waste of time and not good for a learning environment at all.

I never thought about doing angel dust, never thought about having sex with the same sex. These adult teachers are giving these questions to TEENS. It’s disgusting. Completely utterly disgusting.

Not tame in the least.

You have zero idea what this teacher believes or teaches. Neither do I

Presuming facts not in evidence is pointless

And this is a senior seminar

Don’t know when you went to high school but we had a similar class when I was a senior. These were some of the things discussed

I don’t send my children to any educational facility to be indoctrinated as part of the school curriculum.

Good freakin grief!

The answers to those questions are absolutely not on any level the business of this illiterate slob.
