Canada Demanding U.S. End 'Right to Work' Laws as Part of NAFTA Renegotiation

Canada is demanding goodies from the United States Congress as part of the renegotiation of NAFTA.

From The Globe and Mail:

One group of negotiators spent all day Sunday working on the labour file, according to a schedule of the talks obtained by The Globe and Mail. One source familiar with the discussions said Canada wants the United States to pass a federal law stopping state governments from enacting right-to-work legislation; the source said the United States has not agreed to such a request. Canada believes that lower labour standards in the United States and Mexico, including right to work, give those countries an unfair advantage in attracting jobs.

Jerry Dias, the leader of Canada's largest private-sector trade union, said Ottawa's negotiators are: pushing Mexico on its corporate-sanctioned unions, which are accused of negotiating collective agreements unfavourable to workers; agitating for both countries to offer a year of paid family leave, as Canada does; and targeting American right-to-work laws that allow workers in unionized shops to refuse to pay dues, draining money from unions.

"I'm very pleased with the position the Canadian government is taking on labour standards," Mr. Dias, president of Unifor, told reporters outside the talks. "Canada's got two problems: The low wage rates in Mexico and the right-to-work states in the United States."

There's audacious, there's egregious, and there is political extortion.

That a country with a population roughly equivalent to that of California is demanding the passage of a federal law in the United States is a bit...much. Worse yet, it is a law that shifts powers from the states to Washington,

That’s cute.

It's hard for me to imagine a country with which we don't run a balance of trade *deficit*...and I'll assume we do with Canada. That would put us in the driver's seat in any negotiations.

So to Trudeau I'd simply say "non, merci!"

Fine, we demand that canada allow firearm ownership, free speech even for opposing viewpoints, and freedom of religion.
We should send then the Bill of Rights and tell them “that’s quaint, we demand this instead.”

I can't blame Canada for trying hard to do exactly what we'd want our government to do under similar circumstances, but I really have to wonder if they've got the right people advising them. Clearly they have no idea how the U.S. system of government works.

They obviously don't understand U.S. politics, either. I believe there are 27 states with "right to work" laws right now. Of these, all but two of them (Nevada and Virginia) voted for Donald Trump in 2016.

I travel I-91 from the Quebec border down toward Massachusetts fairly regularly.Like clockwork every time I do I see huge truck after huge truck chock full of logs also heading south. And they all have Quebec plates on them.So you could be right...I don't know if there are any paper mills in Vermont but I think there might be at least one in Massachusetts. After all,the paper used in US currency notes is made exclusively in Dalton,Massachusetts...which is where I-91 runs.

I remember reading a statistic (long time ago, but still generally true, I’m sure) - it went something like this:

The United States does 20% of its trade with Canada.
Canada does 80% of their its with the United States.

They better watch who they piss off...they’re not in much of a position to be making demands.

The economy of the state of New York alone is about the size of Canada’s entire economy.

And note — New York’s population is 20 Million, Canada’s is 36 million.

No, “Canada”. Why don’t you enact right to work instead?

Adorable.

Canada still thinks this is the 19th century, and mother Britian can back them up on their bluster.

Every year on Arbor day I feel like I should send Canada a note thanking them for being the storehouse for our trees.

Other than that, Canada is pretty useless.

If I were Canadian, I’d be insulted to have my country compared to a state circling the bowl. NYS is hemorrhaging taxpayers and House seats.

And a note to Canada from this NYSer: Guess what...NYS ain’t a right to work state.

Considering how un-American many of the union leadership have become, that is setting a pretty high barrier to free and open discussions.

Except for collecting funds for shutting down industries, most of the private-sector unions have not contributed much to the overall economy of the US, beyond their negative effect, just look at General Motors. And the public-sector unions are engaged in the most one-sided negotiations found anywhere in the world.

Am I anti-union? Hell, no. But I AM quite anti-corruption. And “union” has become but another definition for “corruption”.

Why don’t the hosers admit they are a failing society of losers and stop the pretending. These fools need to just sit back, eat a lot of moose jerky and drink crappy beer. That is the limit of their expertise and knowledge.

I have the right to work. My employer has the right to fire me if I don’t do a good job. I like it that way. Unions and Canada and NAFTA can pound sand.
