Keys are 3-5FT above sea level... with a storm surge of 6 to 8 ft and then 25 to 35 ft seas... this could be the end of the keys!!!!
What makes me literally furious, (and you touched on it there) are the folks who are too stupid to leave, then demand emergency people risk their lives when they get in over their heads.

As I understand it, the surge is sometimes 14-20 feet.
Not sure about that specific area, but the Keys are clearly at maximum risk at the moment.
Heavy waves and islands just 3-5 feet above sea level, you’re comments make sense to me.

If it stays on track and hits with 160 MPH winds, it’s more just trying to retrieve the bodies before the sharks get them.
There will be some evidence that mankind once inhabited the Keys...some building foundations left, or at least the outlines. But that will be about it. Cat 5s bring in 25 foot storm surges...most structures there will be fully submerged.

It may be a bad decision to stay but can someone explain who and on what basis someone can make an evacuation “mandatory”? We have this debate in my county all the time during snow storms.
I would rather they say “we will not bail your stupid arse out if you stay” and actually stick to it. You stay you bear the full consequences no rescue choppers, no airdrops, etc..
These islands should never have been inhabited. They should have become federal military bases or prisons. Just look at a map of the keys - they are right out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by ocean. Anyone who remains on the island is SCREWED.

Here in Florida, they cannot be forced to evacuate. So the deputies tell them they will not be rescued. And then they ask for Next-of Kin info................
