Menendez corruption case puts other Democrats at legal risk, sidelines senator for trial

As Sen. Robert Menendez prepares to face corruption charges, Republicans are confident and Democrats fearful that the taint of a weekslong trial will snare other prominent Democrats in New Jersey and Washington.

The trial kicks off Wednesday in New Jersey, where the 11-year incumbent senator is accused of using his office to try to assist and protect a longtime friend, Dr. Salomon Melgen, in disputes with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

One high-profile Democrat already has been caught in the backwash. Former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, who retired last year, was fingered as trying to help Mr. Menendez in his efforts to derail a federal probe of Melgen.

“Who knows who else will be implicated, but it’s clear now that the corruption extended beyond Menendez’s office,” said Michael Ahrens, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee. “It’s just as stunning that no Senate Democrat has said Menendez should resign immediately if convicted.”

We can only hope.

And hope that those in charge will do their duties!

Just curious how many Dem Senators had a hand in this and how many RINO Senators for that matter.

Is there any more proof that CMS needs to be abolished, or at least turned over to the states?

How many stories have you heard about people gaming the system or bilking Medicare out of millions? How many able-bodied people who use Medicaid?

Yet anyone who questions the very existence of these two programs are accused of wanting seniors to eat dog food.

Medicare and Medicaid should be completely turned over to the states. I'll even support a one-time block grant so the states can get or merge the programs with their state programs.

No it's not. Just look what these SOB's did to the country the past few decades. Menendez is another who belongs in jail.

What a state that is for major DEMOCRAT scandals...

State of corruption: N.J.'s most infamous political scandals

By Jonathan D. Salant | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The Star-Ledger
May 03, 2015

WASHINGTON — In New Jersey, it seems, politics and corruption go together like bacon and eggs in one of the state's numerous diners.

Prominent politicians from all levels of government have been involved in scandal. Here's a sampling through the years.

ABSCAM

Harrison Williams (D-N.J.) served 23 years in the U.S. Senate until he was
convicted of bribery and conspiracy for agreeing to help a fake Arab sheikh, who actually was engaged in an FBI undercover operation, in exchange for money. The Abscam scandal made it to the big screen in 2013 with the movie "American Hustle." Williams resigned in 1982 before he could be expelled and served two years in prison. Also convicted in the scandal were U.S. Rep. Frank Thompson (D-Trenton) and Camden Mayor Angelo Errichetti.

'I AM A GAY AMERICAN'

Gov. Jim McGreevey [Democrat] resigned as the state's chief executive in August 2004 following revelations that he was engaged in an extramarital relationship with a man he had put on the state payroll despite spotty qualifications. McGreevey, who was married to a woman at the time, came out as a gay man at a press conference at which he announced his sexual orientation. The resignation, which came as McGreevey faced a possible sexual harassment lawsuit from Golan Cipel, an Israeli he had named as his homeland security adviser, ended a tumultuous two-and-a-half-year governorship for the Democrat. It was followed by a nasty and public divorce from his wife, tell-all books and late-night TV jokes.

WANT TO BUY A KIDNEY?

In 2009, federal prosecutors indicted 44 people, on charges of taking bribes to clear the way for building permits, with one person even offering to sell a human kidney. The case, known as Bid Rig III, ensnared three mayors, two legislators and more than 20 candidates for public office, who were charged with taking cash bribes to help green-light questionable development projects. Separately, five Orthodox rabbis from Brooklyn and the Jersey Shore were charged with laundering millions of dollars through various religious charities. Related to the scandal, the state's community affairs commissioner resigned after the FBI searched his home and office. The investigation was begun by then-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie.

'I AM THE LAW'

Frank Hague, Jersey City mayor for three decades [Democrat], was never convicted of a crime despite several investigations. His control over the city's political machinery was absolute. He retired a multimillionaire on a mayor's salary, allegedly because of the bribes he received.

A FAVOR FOR A FRIEND?

New Jersey's senior U.S. senator, Democrat Robert Menendez, was indicted April 1 on 14 criminal corruption counts for intervening with federal agencies on behalf of a friend and campaign donor, Dr. Salomon Melgen, in exchange for gifts, trips and campaign contributions. Menendez says he's done nothing wrong.

THE TORCH IS LIT

U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli, nicknamed the Torch [Democrat], tried to win a second term in the upper chamber after seven terms in the U.S. House, but withdrew two months before the election following allegations that he received illegal campaign contributions from businessman David Chang. Democrats scrambled to replace Torricelli on the ballot with former Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who agreed to run again. Torricelli later was admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee.

TROUBLES IN NEWARK

The state's largest city has had its share of corruption.
Former U.S. Rep. Hugh Addonizio [Democrat] left the Capitol for Newark City Hall, where he was charged in 1970 with consipracy to receive $1.4 million in kickbacks from city contractors. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Another Newark mayor, Sharpe James, spent 18 months behind bars after his 2008 fraud conviction for illegally steering city land to Tamika Riley, described as his mistresss, who then sold it at a profit. He later was ordered to repay his campaign committee $86,504 because he improperly used those funds to cover his legal expenses. James was succeeded as Newark mayor by Cory Booker, now a U.S. senator.

A CONVICTION IS NO BARRIER TO RE-ELECTION

William Musto, mayor of Union City and a state senator [Democrat], was convicted of racketeering following a trial in which a former aide, Bob Menendez, was a prosecution witness. The day after being sentenced to prison in 1982, Musto was re-elected mayor. He didn't serve his term but did spend more than three years behind bars.

A CAPITAL OFFENSE

The head of New Jersey's capital city, Trenton Mayor Tony Mack [Democrat], was found guilty in 2014 of taking bribes from developers in exchange for selling city-owned property at below market value. The payments came just two years after Mack was elected to office.

McGreevey Had Gay Truckstop Sex While Maintaining Heterosexual Cover

James Joyner
Monday, May 22, 2006

Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey reveals his life of seedy debauchery before press revelations of an affair with a male aide forced him into coming out of the closet.

Jim McGreevey shockingly admits that before he became governor of New Jersey, he’d have anonymous gay sex at Garden State highway rest stops. “All I knew was that my behavior was getting crazier and crazier,” McGreevey says of his torrid truck-stop trysts in an upcoming book that details his tortured life of lies and sexual repression:

With each new encounter, I was getting nearer and nearer to being caught – which surely would have generated headlines, especially after I became executive director of the state parole board” in the mid-1980s. “The closet starves a man, and when he gets a chance he gorges till it sickens him,” he writes in his book, titled “The Confession.”

Is Medicare the Democrats' slush fund?

Ex-Democratic Leader Harry Reid, who retired last year, was just fingered.....trying to help Sen Menendez in his efforts to derail a federal Medicare probe of Menendez's pal, eye doctor Melgen (currently in jail).

Harry loves that Medicare money. Here's how he handed $4.3 billion tax dollars.......attached to a Medicare bill ......to get then-Louisiana Sen Mary Landrieu's vote. Yet another indictment of the Obamacare atrocity.

The payoff to Landrieu should be investigated as an indication of how EVERY Democrat came to vote for Obamacare.

BACKSTORY In the fall of 2009, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was trying to get the necessary 60 Dimocrat votes to pass the Affordable Care Act. Reid needed every Dim on board, which gave waffling senators a great deal of leverage.

In Landrieu's case, she connivingly saw that selling her aye vote could get her maybe $200 million federal dollars. Obama complied--- Reid chalked up another vote for Obamacare---but $4.3 went to Landrieu not the $200,000 she had bargained for.

<><> Was Mary the baglady for buying the other senators aye votes?

THE LANDRIEU PAPER TRAIL IS HUGE Landrieu sold her aye vote for a "price." Landrieu was bought off in what Forbes Magazine dubbed "The 'Louisiana Purchase" that included a massive $4.3 Billion to Landrieu.

FORBES REPORTED the Democrats’ nailed Landrieu’s support for Obamacare w/ a greenback bribe. Landrieu, critics believe, pledged her vote in exchange for some $200 million more additional federal funds for Louisiana. Except that, due to a drafting error, the law ended up giving Louisiana $4.3 billion attached to a Medicare bill: more than twenty times the assigned amount.
