how the hell is it going to do this with air-breathing engines?

Conversely are they going to take the weight penalty of caring LOX for space flight that just dead weight for most of its atmospheric mission?

it sounds like it’s going to make one of those fish nor fowl compromises that really does works not that well either way

Pretty cool video of a MIG-29 demo ride to 60K feet.

62 miles is considered suborbital as I understand it. Figures out to 327,000 feet to put it into perpective. The old x-15's flew up to 67 miles, but they were rocket powered, of course. This Mig 41 would be a huge leap forward. Wiki says a manned version of it could be in operation as early as 2025.

The U2's and SR71's are ballpark comparable to this Mig-29 as far as altitude performance according to sources I looked at.

I'm sure that they will just buy the bearings.

Yes, they have learned to make high precision bearings in their jet engines. They don’t quite last as long as ours but they’re in the same ballpark. It’s China that until recently hadn’t figured it out yet and had jet engines with 30 hour lifespans. (Not a typo.) However, a couple years ago they developed the Taishan jet turbine which has a 2200 hour MTBO.

For comparison, the current Russian ones have a 2200 to 4000 hour MTBO and the most common US combat aircraft turbine - the F101 - has a 4000-6000 hour MTBO depending on variant.

That said, the Russians have sometimes made better turbines than we have, at least in applications where the turbine isn’t providing direct thrust such as in helicopters.

Their defense budget is a fraction of ours. So they’re either magicians or liars.

Depends on how they spend it.

Remember when the USA spent millions to develop a pen that would work in space?

The Russians used a pencil.

The British reaction engine is the real promise but US wont invest... which is like saying we could care less of Whittle and keep piston props instead...

“F-15, and the ASAT program was terminated long ago.”

Not much need for it anymore. Any of our destroyers can take out a satellite with a Standard missile.
