The loss of the USS Indianapolis is one of the most horrifying war stories ever.

Rest in peace dear sailors.

My humble gratitude for your service and sacrifice in defense of our nation.

18000 feet. Compared to the Edmund Fitzgerald in about 530 feet at the bottom Lake Superior, the Titanic at about 12500 in the North Atlantic, and the Bismarck at 15719 feet also in the North Atlantic.

Thank you oil companies for developing the technology that makes such explorations possible.

Have you read the story behind Robert Ballard’s discovery of the Titanic in 1985? Thought it would tie into your comment. Very neat, link enclosed:

Is it true they couldn’t send a distress signal?

Distress signals were received but not taken seriously. The sinking was only discovered by the Navy four days later when survivors were spotted by aircraft. It is one of the Navy's greatest failures.

It must be recalled that the skipper of the Japanese sub which sank Indianapolis testified that the visibility was so good that a zig zag maneuver would not have saved Indianapolis. Many observers of the proceedings saw Captain McVeigh’s court martial as forced by the Admiral Ernest King’s demand for a scalp, the verdict predetermined and the facts be damned.

Actually the guy that found the SS Central America, Tommy Thompson, developed most of that stuff.

The Titanic hit the bottom of the ocean at about 35mph.
That ship was broken in half on the surface and the compartments that were watertight blew - imploded which made the back half of the ship look as it does.

I wonder how fast the Indianapolis hit the bottom?
It would have had many watertight compartments although I expect the guys left the ship with the hatches open to escape.
