When Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey goes on trial on federal corruption charges in less than three weeks, far more than his own fate hinges on the outcome.
If Mr. Menendez, a Democrat, is convicted and then expelled from the United States Senate by early January, his replacement would be picked by Gov. Chris Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey and an ally of President Trump.
That scenario where Mr. Menendezs interim replacement would more than likely be a Republican would have immediate and far-reaching implications: The Republicans would be gifted a crucial extra vote just as the party remains a single vote shy in the Senate of advancing its bill to dismantle President Obamas signature health care law. Those potential consequences only heighten the drama around the first federal bribery charges leveled against a sitting senator in a generation.
He added, Thats a big if.
Its enough to have Democrats anxious. Many of us have a personal concern about Bob Menendez, said Robert G. Torricelli, a former Democratic senator of New Jersey. But theres also an overriding concern about the Republicans strengthening their control in the Senate and, in the near term, being able to repeal Obamacare and 16 million people losing their health care.

Oh pretty please....
If anyone believes this trial will be over before the 2018 elections they are smoking something besides tobacco.
Torricelli doesn’t give a rats rump about him. He’s worried about the SEAT and that’s the extent of it.
And, yes...they probably WILL drag this out and drag this out and drag this out. Grrrr!
Yep, the Torch illegally backed out of a race he was going to lose and Frank Lautenberg was substituted in illegally.
Did I mention that it was illegal for Lautenberg to replace Torricelli on the ballot?
On offer he can’t refuse b4 Christie leaves office. Christie will act in his own self interest though.
Christie is term limited out and the new election in Nov. 2017.
I can’t picture this trial not lasting past the new year
I don’t expect any great Republican Senator from New Jersey.
We have a New Jersey Republican running for Governor of Virginia.
The Dims would probably find a judge who’d order that Bob Torricelli be sworn in to finish Menendez’s term.
: The Republicans would be gifted a crucial extra vote ....

Don’t worry, NYT, they will just fritter it away.
You didn’t have to. Laws are for Republicans.
And they go to The Torch, another crook, for a quote? Ha ha ha.
Of course they don’t say that those “luxury vacations” were trips that Menendez made to abuse underage girls. Who knows, maybe boys, too. That he is still in the senate shows just how far this country has fallen.
