ACLU blames McAuliffe, police for Charlottesville

In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left one dead and at least 38 injured, many members of the national media were quick to blame the “Unite the Right” rally attendees for the outbreak of street warfare between “alt-right” and “alt-left” protesters.

But according to the ACLU and reporters covering the rally, the violence escalated due to what many believe was an intentional lack of police oversight, with the blame aimed squarely at Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

“The police actually allowed us to square off against each other,” one counter-protester told CNN. “There were fights, and the police were standing a block away the entire time. It’s almost as if they wanted us to fight each other.”

The ACLU also contends the “passive” police presence may have been intentional to allow authorities to declare an “unlawful assembly” and justify shutting down the rally.

“We asked the city to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and ensure people’s safety at the protest. It failed to do so. In our system, the city makes the rules and the courts enforce them,” the ACLU of Virginia’s Executive Director Claire Gastanaga said in a statement. “It is the responsibility of law enforcement to ensure safety of both protesters and counter-protesters. The policing on Saturday was not effective in preventing violence.”

The police can testify as to what orders were given. Get moving on it. My God. If this is not nipped in the bud, we ARE going to have conflict.

If they wanted a peaceful protest the city would have kept the protestors far apart

There is a concept here that I’m not quite grasping in the full philosphical/constitutional sense. Someone help me out here.

Any time groups of people (small or very large) want to “peaceably assemble” under their first amendment rights, the state needs to also assemble an equivalent police force and it’s the fault of the state of the “peaceable” protesters don’t’ stay peaceful?

Granted, I get the point that they are claiming willful negligence.... that there was a police presence and they intentionally did not create a barrier.

But how much should it cost the people when groups assemble and don’t stay peaceful? Millions? Billions? Should we call in the national guard? Military? Where does this “responsibility” stop?

Or does it just legally reside with the people who didn’t stay peaceful?

Looks like the ACLU is asking to get added to the SPLC’s list of hate groups.

They know when the facts come out, the Democrats are going to be hit hard. They are trying to focus all the blame on McAuliffe to protect the party. The ACLU is just following orders like a good dog.

Terry McAuliffe is certainly to blame for pandering, being a politically correct politician...playing all sides against each other.....

I do not blame the police. I blame the mayor and the governor and most likely others in the dimoKKKRAT party.

Don’t get confused, it’s still the same old ACLU. Making America safe for communists.

Even with this, most the RINOs will remain too frightened of the Democrats to speak up about it. It’s much easier for them to keep pretending to be ‘outraged’ at the president calling out both sides for violence.

About once every ten years or so the ACLU manages to swerve into the right answer.

Not as hopeful. They may bear responsibility but no way will they accept responsibility. They’ll turn it around somehow. Like DJT wore a particular tie to signal the neo nazis it was time to go or something. I put NOTHING past them anymore.
