Edith Rivera loved her life in Hampton, Iowa, but for many undocumented immigrants like her, this summer has been a season of fear or flight.
It was quitting time. Edith Rivera took one last lunch order, dropped off a basket of tortilla chips and set off from work, heading out to the farm roads where other immigrants feared to drive.
Like them, Ms. Rivera, 33, had no legal status in the country where she had lived for 18 years. She had no driver’s license, apart from the long-expired North Carolina identification she held safe, like a talisman, in her wallet.
But as she skimmed past the northern Iowa cornfields on her way to her son Steven’s seventh-grade track meet, she did not share other immigrants’ fears. Not of being pulled over. Not of raids or deportation. Not of the man in the White House. Not of the new Franklin County sheriff’s quest to make sure this rapidly diversifying community of hog barns and egg farms would never again be known as an immigrant sanctuary.
Her American journey was waning, and she had little left to lose.
Her husband, Jesús Canseco-Rodriguez, was already gone — deported to Mexico in 2015. Ms. Rivera had jettisoned their apartment and sold off what the family had built here in Hampton: their small business power-washing hog barns, Mr. Canseco’s work truck, their furniture.
Now, at this tense juncture for immigrants and their adoptive hometowns across the conservative swaths of rural America, Ms. Rivera planned to sever one last tie. She was returning to Mexico — and to her husband — with Steven, 13 years old and American-born.
Some politicians call it “self-deportation.” She called it her family’s only hope of being together.

She is an unlicensed and uninsured motorist, so she is a high risk to all other drivers. Another 18 year pair of laws broken.
But she DOES have her talisman...does that fix all the law-breaking?
OK, NYT, kindly explain how many laws you must break and for how long before you are a CRIMINAL? Is showing up at a MAGA rally enough to make you a criminal?

FYI: Driving without a license is ILLEGAL.
If you do not have a license, you can not buy car insurance. Driving without car insurance is also illegal.
If she was to get into an accident, the person she hit would be out of pocket for any expanses including no chance for restitution in the event of injury or death. Often times Citizens and LEGAL residents are sued in our courts by illegals and their unscrupulous lawyers even when they are at fault in accidents simply because insurance companies will settle suits and give these illegal criminals a payday on our dime.
This one sentence shows at least two serious civil crimes that would cost citizens dearly.
Illegal immigrants are thieves. They steal from us at every turn. When they have their children in our hospitals and use them to get welfare benefits,they are stealing our healthcare and tax dollars. When they work under the table or for lower wages than a citizen can work for. They are stealing. When they drive on the roads paid for by our tax dollars they are stealing.
No, I think Mexico needs at least a $150.00 an hour minimum wage. Then we could manufacture products to export to all those rich Mexicans. At least that must be the way it works or why would people keep insisting on raising the minimum wage.
Illegal aliens should leave, now, today.
You have been ripping us off, ignoring ALL of our laws long enough.
If you had wanted to be an American you would have applied to be one, waited your turn, paid your fees, learned the language and become an immigrant by complying with the laws.

This country does not need illegal immigrants.
We have a vast supply of unemployed low skilled people who can be tapped for the type of work that these Illegals provide.
Simply eliminate long term welfare benefits to citizens who have no physical or mental defects and we would quickly fill these positions and often at wages higher than the non tax paying illegals receive. Many of these illegals avail themselves of our generous welfare benefits themselves.
Illegal workers depress the wages of our lowest skilled workers.
The reason why so few MSM Liberals, Wall Streeters and Hollywood Elitists are pro illegal immigration is the fact that it is highly unlikely that a group of Illegals are going to take over media, hedge funds and Hollywood blockbusters. However, roofing contractors, cement contractors, dry wall hangers service personnel in restaurant kitchens and domestic service workers are easily replaced by low wage illegals who provide an endless supply of virtual slave labor for the elites.
Eliminate the endless supply of cheap slave labor and lower income citizens’ wages will improve dramatically and welfare and food stamp rolls and expenses will drop precipitously.
A job is the best form of welfare reform. Eliminate the illegals and wages will rise to the point that even chronic welfare recipients will be motivated to get a job.
Good . you came here illegally. Hopefully you saved enough money to start over in Mexico. Now your son can get to know his Mexican relatives til he turns 18 and comes back here as an adult.

‘undocumented’ is just journalist talk. She probably has IDs which are accepted by TSA. She may well have a Mexican passport as well as a voter id card from her state with her picture and thumb print on it.
