Stay, Hide or Leave? Hard Choices for Immigrants in the Heartland
NY Slimes ^ | 12 Aug 17 | JACK HEALY

Edith Rivera loved her life in Hampton, Iowa, but for many undocumented immigrants like her, this summer has been a season of fear or flight.

It was quitting time. Edith Rivera took one last lunch order, dropped off a basket of tortilla chips and set off from work, heading out to the farm roads where other immigrants feared to drive.

Like them, Ms. Rivera, 33, had no legal status in the country where she had lived for 18 years. She had no driver’s license, apart from the long-expired North Carolina identification she held safe, like a talisman, in her wallet.

But as she skimmed past the northern Iowa cornfields on her way to her son Steven’s seventh-grade track meet, she did not share other immigrants’ fears. Not of being pulled over. Not of raids or deportation. Not of the man in the White House. Not of the new Franklin County sheriff’s quest to make sure this rapidly diversifying community of hog barns and egg farms would never again be known as an immigrant sanctuary.

Her American journey was waning, and she had little left to lose.

Her husband, Jesús Canseco-Rodriguez, was already gone — deported to Mexico in 2015. Ms. Rivera had jettisoned their apartment and sold off what the family had built here in Hampton: their small business power-washing hog barns, Mr. Canseco’s work truck, their furniture.

Now, at this tense juncture for immigrants and their adoptive hometowns across the conservative swaths of rural America, Ms. Rivera planned to sever one last tie. She was returning to Mexico — and to her husband — with Steven, 13 years old and American-born.

Some politicians call it “self-deportation.” She called it her family’s only hope of being together.

There is not even a mention of the other side of the argument. Not even one.

This is journalism today. It’s advocacy.

The term "Undocumented Immigrants" is itself offensive. It implies that illegal invaders are engaged in something legitimate.

They are not. They are engaged in illegal behavior, and are foreign born Invaders.

It would be akin to calling men who rape women "Pre-Marriage License Husbands."

It is an affront to decency and an assault on the language, and the truth.

As it should be - why did you wait 2 years?

They are not immigrants.

They are illegal aliens.

They made their bed. They can lay in it.

You’re right of course - she wasn’t an immigrant when she broke in. She was an illegal alien. She still is. The word immigrant describes a lawful process of coming from another country to live here.

They put illegals like this in the news. Why don’t they profile more of the ms13 types? What about other violent offenders?

What about immigrants on welfare? That is a more realistic profile.

I'm familiar with Hampton... 50 years ago it was a very neat, clean, safe little community with a thriving retail and service community, at least one nationally-known company, was situated on a major (for Iowa) highway and served by three different rail lines. The surrounding farmland - immense, fairly flat and very productive - was divided into small family farms. When our family used to drive through Hampton on our rare trips, we thought it was a wonderful place.

(To be fair, that part of Iowa had a lot of similar towns- Belmond, Humboldt, etc.)

Now Hampton is roughly half foreign-born, Walmart and Mason City took the stores, much of the old Highway 3 traffic is down on a four-lane US 20, and there is one mega-railroad that basically roars through town on the one remaining bit of track. The surrounding farmland is now in the hands of a much smaller number of large landowners... many of whom are/were invested in the confinement facilities that hired illegals beginning in the 1980's... that was when guys like Austin ("Jack") DeCoster tapped into the old Iowa farmers' Achilles heel: greed.

Fewer farms, fewer farm families... the small town goes to hell.
