DETROIT (AP) - Half of Detroits eight mayoral candidates have been convicted of felony crimes involving drugs, assault or weapons. Three of the contenders on next Tuesdays primary ballot were charged with gun crimes, and two of them were charged for assault with intent to commit murder, a Detroit News analysis shows .
Some of the offenses date back decades. The most recent was in 2008.
Political consultant Greg Bowens says there are candidates in every election cycle with past hardships. Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges, Bowens said. They (the candidates) deserve the opportunity to be heard, but they also deserve to have the kind of scrutiny that comes along with trying to get an important elected position.
State election law says convicted felons can vote and run for office as long as theyre not incarcerated or guilty of certain fraud-related offenses or crimes involving a breach of the public trust.

Hey, felonies convictions are Democrat resume builders. The more, the better. Kwame Kilpatrick will run again someday.
they probably wont find one that doesnt
They have a culture & tradition that must be upheld. A requirement you know for a dimoKKKRAT.
Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges,
WOW! I never thought of it that way. That makes so much sense.(/S)
Yeah...that’s the way to turn the worst city in America around? The press has no clue and is our enemy today.

And I had lived in Woodlawn in Chicago, home of the Blackstone Rangers.
Felonies. Does that mean they can’t vote for themselves?
The other half have criminal futures.
For every cockroach you see (or know about) there are ten you don’t see. Definitely applies here: The other half were never caught.
can’t you run for mayor of Detroit from prison?
it made news because that’s a record low for detroit.
So what? They paid their debt to society. I am sick of the way people with convictions can’t get jobs.
You gotta problem wit dat?
Only half? Pikers!
