President Trump says he’s finally gotten somewhere in his years-long crusade to get Apple to build more products in the US. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal today, Trump said that Apple CEO Tim Cook called him and committed to build “three big plants, beautiful plants” in the United States.
For now, there’s no detail beyond that. Apple declined to comment to the Journal and hasn’t responded to our own request for comment.
If Trump’s statement is correct, that’d be a big investment on Apple’s behalf and a significant change of pace. Right now, Apple only has Mac Pros manufactured in the US, and it hasn’t even committed to continuing that. Apple also generally prefers to work with outside suppliers, so it can source parts from multiple companies and shield itself from risk — such as when it turns out that an entire factory is worthless because its manufacturing method didn’t pan out.

Sounds goood, but don’t build any in blue states.

Hmmm, I find that interesting in that he called President Trump.
They have to be built in blue states because Tim Cook is a queer and queers are allowed into red states
Wow, pretty queer words coming from a renewable energy enthusiast & agendanista.
And if you don't like it that I'm a renewable energy enthusiast or my that state has a lot of renewable energy, you can go suck a big wind turbine.
You can enthuse over whatever you want. Just as long as you and your fellow enthusiasts don’t ask me to subsidize you. But you enthusiasts have been demanding never ending subsidies. And, guess what, Apple and its customers don’t demand subsidies but, instead, we pay our own way.
I have the impression that Apple is not a Trump supporting company...
Tim Cook has not avoided politics...
All CEOS should avoid politics why make 50 percent unhappy
They won’t be able to afford building them in blue states.
These 3 plants will probably be staffed by H1B’s. Few US citizens will be hired.
Tim Cook and Apple are highly enthusiastic about renewable energy. Here's a short article published recently about Apple and Renewable energy.
Sorry, “Ben”, I actually am well informed about this subject. Anybody can be enthusiastic about “renewable energy” as long as they don’t ask me to pay for it but cover their own costs (as Apple does). I think Apple’s emphasis on generating, using “renewables”, the equivalent of 100% of their own energy use is silly, personally. And it’s certainly a waste of THEIR money.
People miss the point of Apple (and many others) investing in solar: independence.
They’re not beholden to the foibles, failings and fascinations of other companies. Blackouts? Competing customers? Bad choices? Not Apple’s (our whoever’s) problem.
Other nations have other methods. Germany and Spain have used feed in tariffs.
Robots.
Nice, I hope it’s true...if it is a win...
Anyway, would like to see Apple bring some manufacturing back to USA. If they do, it will be direct result of Trump's initiative to reduce regulations, red tape and onerous taxes that forced companies to take manufacturing outside the country in the first place.
Sorry to disagree with you here, Atreides, but in each instance where Apple has gone 100% independent of the grid, it has saved millions of dollars each year in energy costs they would have expended in utility expenses. In addition, Apple has actually now, in their services area, a line item for sales of energy INTO the grid when they don't use all of the energy their systems generate. The energy independence has become a net profit generator (excuse the pun) albeit a small one in comparison to the huge profit generators of their hardware.
I do, also, believe that Apple has taken advantage of the tax credits for solar and alternative fuels in installing these generation facilities. They would be foolish—and in violation of their financial obligations to their investors—not too. Some Liberals would assert that using such tax credits is requiring other tax payers to "foot the bill" in that Apple is somehow (read immorally) not sending in as many tax dollars to the IRS as they would have were they taking advantage of these tax credits (read dishonest tax loopholes when a rich corporation uses them). I take the other view, the money we send to the government is OURS that we are voluntarily contributing to the general weal, not the government's that the government is claiming back from us. Taxes are never a government cost and cannot be counted as an expense that other taxpayers "foot the bill for" when anyone takes advantage of the laws Congress has written to lower their taxes.
You certainly are a glass half-empty guy, aren't you?
