Don’t forget that he was bucking to be the first “President of the European Union” (the media hype name of what is officially called “President of the European Council”) at one time. The job went to Herman Achille, Count van Rompuy (of Belgium) instead. The current holder of the position is Donald Tusk of Poland, the former left-wing prime minister.

He also wanted to repackage the Socialist International as the "Centre-Left International" to make it more appealing to countries such as the U.S. where the word "socialism" is avoided, and he wanted to invite Bill Clinton and the Democratic Party to join (instead they just send delegates). Clinton in turn was pushing for Blair to be U.N. Secretary General.
