Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contestants Step Up to the Scale
New York One News (NY1.com) ^ | July 3, 2017

It's weigh in time for competitors ready to stuff their faces Tuesday at the famous Nathan's hot dog eating contest in Coney Island.

Eaters to watch this year include reigning hot dog champ Joey "Jaws" Chestnut.

He's taken home the mustard yellow belt nine of the last 10 years.

Chestnut will try to chew his way to the top against rival Matt Stonie, who briefly took the title two years ago.

Chestnut bit back last year, redeeming the frankfurter crown, out chomping Stonie during a nail biter at the beach.

He ended up scarfing down a record 70 dogs in 10 minutes.

First bites are set for high noon Tuesday.

But ladies first, starting at 11 a.m. three-peat women's champion Miki Sudo will look to top her performance of 38 and a half dogs.

If I were there watching this, the last thing on earth that I would want to do is buy and eat a Nathan's hot dog.

BTW: My brother, up until about a month ago, lived straight down the avenue from this place (Stillwell Ave). In between (also on Stillwell), was the location of the concrete company that Gambino mobster Sammy "The Bull" Gravano once owned.

Is that the only prize, as much publicity as this event always receives?

First place is also a $10,000 cash prize, and other sponsors have given other prizes.

I believe Nathan’s is now owned by Shuanghui of China.

Gross.....

A hot dog is to be grilled, with mustard added along with relish or onions, and then eaten & enjoyed. Not like this.

That said, Matt Stonie has made some hilarious reverse videos of the contest itself or of him `uneating’ fast food.

I buy the fat Hoffy hot dogs. Can get them here at Smart & Final. We call them gun range dogs because they’re the ones our outdoor gun range sells. Lol

One these times, and I hope it doesn't happen, a contestant will die trying to break the record of 90 dogs w/buns in 11 minutes.

The Coney Island hot dog has an interesting history which did not actually begin at the popular New York beach.

the Silent Woman was a restaurant in Waterville Maine that featured a headless woman carrying a tray filled with food.

Best Popovers Ever!

It didn’t make it out of the eighties. Not with that name.

I don’t think Nathans is that great of a hot dog....Oscar Meyer had put out a NY Style deli hotdog a couple of years ago that were terrific, except they only made them that year because I can’t find them anymore....

Was the headless woman found in a topless bar?

Well, that's good, and I'm sure I've seen an Asian contestant in a commercial or two downing the hot dogs in a restaurant while onlookers watch in shock. I expect Joey Chestnut gets a fair number of commercials.

That's right, Fink. Look at those steaming weenies. And you know what they're saying, Larry? They're saying, 'This is the year that Fink beats The Stomach.'"

It’s not the dog so much as it is the flat top they are cooked on. A Nathans hot dog is supposed to snap when you bite into it. Even if you buy them from the store, unless you cook them right it is just another hot dog. Next time you cook them, if you have a griddle, cook them on that.

I agree. And they're expensive as hell, at least at the Nathan's in Coney Island.

The best frank I've ever had are made by Sabrett. Supermarkets sell a bun-sized 8-pack and a longer thinner one, also 8-pack. IMO, the longer thinner one, for some reason, tastes better, although both are very good. I cook them in a toaster oven on low-moderate temp allowing them to slowly sizzle. Takes a little longer this way, but they come out more juicy and favorable.
