Here is a news flash for the Australian political community: a policy position can be true even if Tony Abbott argues for it.
Abbotts speech this week to the Centre for Independent Studies on the case for nuclear submarines was well researched, cogently argued and at a strategic level powerfully persuasive. There is no doubt nuclear subs would be a much better option than the conventional subs we are committed to.
But, because I dont want to be misunderstood, let me give you the punchline straight away. Abbotts proposal is also completely unrealistic and, if it gains any traction, can serve only to inject yet new delay into the already insanely slow process of our acquiring new subs.
It is also a melancholy truth his credibility in this is undermined by the fact he was opposition leader for four years and prime minister for two, and despite concerted efforts from outside advocates of nuclear subs absolutely nothing happened about them on his watch.

Is it just me? Or is Australia a lot close to Asia than it used to be...?
And wasn’t there an island off to the left of it?
closer
What is the name of the island to the left of Australia? Madagascar?
Island to the left of Australia: New Zealand! You are holding your map upside down.
You’re probably thinking of Indonesia, which includes a big chunk of the island of Borneo. It’s northwest of Australia (due north of Western Australia). Madagascar is way over on the opposite side of the Indian Ocean.
There was a large island called Atlantis, but it sank because of Global Warming.
Those gosh darned Atlanians drove too many SUVs so glowbull warming sunk their continent. </sarc>
I was asking the other poster to clarify what he meant “island left of Australia”
Ballast goes in the bottom.
Australian Navy has always complained they can only advance to the equator before their ships capsize......
“Australian Navy has always complained they can only advance to the equator before their ships capsize”.
Malarky. The only thing they have to do is replace the toilets with clockwise circulating ones.
There used to be another one there but years ago during a moonless night, towboats without identifying markings hooked it up and towed it away to be never seen again.............strange
maybe it’s to the right now
