President Trumps Justice Department is exploring new ways to take down so-called sanctuary cities via legal methods, according to a new report.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the DOJ is developing legal strategies to cancel out sanctuary cities across the country. The goal for DOJ would be to effectively force cities to comply with federal officials, according to the report.
A senior DOJ attorney told the newspaper that the department is pursuing several different options. One option would see Justice officials argue that local police departments refusing to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement illegally pre-empts federal law.
Another would argue that municipalities refusing to comply with ICE are discriminating against ICE because those cities honor requests from other federal agencies, like the FBI.
The DOJ source also said that the federal government is seeking friendly court circuits to present cases against sanctuary cities, and expressed hope that as Trump fills more vacancies on federal courts, the DOJs chances of securing a legal victory will improve, according to the Journal.
Trump and his Justice Department have clashed with sanctuary cities since the beginning of his presidency. His first budget proposal included several changes to immigration law that would crack down on sanctuary cities.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions also announced in March that local governments seeking DOJ grants would not be able to receive those grants if they are a sanctuary city.
No elected officials of the United States should be protecting foreign nationals from our laws, including the President.
DACA must be ended.
Good. Also arrest these “officials” who’ve willfully violated law.
Imposing fines and jail time for officials should put a stop to them.
Why not cut off ALL money to the States...until the States teach their cities to behave?
Agree. This should be step #1.
What is DACA?
Agreed, officials should obey our laws just as we peons have to.
I’m confused. If I help someone break the law, I too am guilty of breaking that law and can be arrested and prosecuted.
The people in this country helping illegals continue breaking the law should be arrested and prosecuted. Those in power in sanctuary cities that openly break these laws have made it abundantly clear they do not wish to honor the “law of the land” (tm).
This is all showboating. Want to make a point? Start arresting people that help illegals continue being illegal. Start with the Sherriff, city council and mayor in Austin. Rinse and repeat in a counter-clockwise fashion until the problem starts solving itself.
Are there protests and marches urging further illegal activity? These people should likewise be arrested and prosecuted.
There there lawmakers and judges making it difficult to enforce our laws? Arrest and prosecute.
This isn’t difficult to understand. Don’t grandstand. Do.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
It is an illegal and unconstitutional program set up by Obama in 2012 that gives illegal aliens permission to stay in the US, work permits and SS#’s.
During the campaign Candidate Trump promised to end it immediately after taking office. Since taking office another 17,000 new applicants have been processed and 107,000 renewals issued to the 750,000 illegal aliens already given permits by Obama.
No illegal alien should be protected from our laws.
DACA stands for, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or those illegals brought to this country as children. Since they were not born here, they aren’t American citizens. Yet they were brought here by parents, against their will, so they are in a different classification than illegal aliens who wilfully broke our laws to be here.
How about if any illegal aliens given sanctuary by these sanctuary cities, if they commit any type of crime, the sanctuary city can be held financially and criminally liable.
You gotta be kidding. Those are strategies? you need to start prosecuting people and putting them in jail for obstructing immigration law! Now THAT would get peoples attention.
Amen, that’d work just fine for me.
Hey Jeff, I have a suggestion.
States and municipalities who engage in abrogation of federal immigration laws should not be granted access to federal assets, such as the NCIC system.
Same with the federal NICS system. And a host of other federal assets.
California says they don’t want to cooperate with federal laws they don’t like? Fine. Kick them out of the whole system.
The resulting chaos will result in popular anger at the scum pushing the “No beeg deal that Kate Steinle is dead” meme. And then they will have to retreat.
The best rule of law is when the rulers live by the law themselves. About time America returns to that. The rule of law is what made America Great and will make America Great again.
Does that include President Trump for continuing to operate DACA as if it were law instead of something dreamed up by Obama?
He promised to end this illegal and unconstitutional affront to the rule of law and hasn’t.
I don’t greet this with the most sanguine heart... the Federal system has already turned into a great, intrusive cancer.
Also I think the best remedy is to remove the Federal incentives to do such a perverse thing. If Uncle Sam is forbidding you to shelter illegals in one breath, but then offering you subsidies for them in the other (enforced by the USSC no less) then you’re going to be conflicted at the least.
No, the goal is to force sanctuary cities to comply with federal LAW.
Do you see what the bastards did there?
This will all have to be postponed until Trump gets another SCOTUS appointment.
