Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) slammed Senate Republicans' healthcare overhaul bill on Friday, saying that it's grounded in "propping up" insurance companies.
He also called for the creation of a healthcare law that would reduce insurance costs to as little as $1 a day for at least some consumers.
"What I'd like to do is legalize inexpensive insurance, and you should be able to get insurance for $1 a day. I mean, you really should," Paul said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "The insurance companies make all the money; all of this is predicated upon still propping up the insurance companies."

So. who’s going to make up the difference in the cost???
you should be able to get insurance for $1 a day. I mean, you really should,” Paul said
We should be able to get elected officials for $1 a day. I mean we really should. Especially those that think the American people are stupid!
$1/day...really? And what dark corner of his butt did that number come from? Clearly, he has no clue about the health insurance industry or how they work.
...and doctors should be chained to their station and work for free too! /s
Everybody pays $365 a year. who pays for the $500k cancer treatments?
I can sell $1 per day insurance effective immediately. It has $5,000,000 deductible and 100% co-pays. Any takers?
That’s nice, but can I get health care too?
The government needs to get out of my business.
Repeal Obamacare and, get out!
Actually, $1/day likely has a path to viability. But, only in the private sector with no regulations and government interference.
I can envision $365/year, if it entailed just catastrophic health care, and near everyone subscribed (via marketing, not mandating).
What makes insurance so expensive is... bureaucracy and coverage of everything from hangnails to band-aids.
Releasing the market, someone would find a niche for very cheap coverage of rare conditions, that if affected you would devastate you financially.
Rand Paul has a big mouth. Beyond that, he hasn’t got much.
Oh he can toss out the great sound bite. It’s the details that evade him.
Here he is again. $1.00 a day would be $365.00 a year.
In 60 years a person would pay out $21,900 dollars in premiums.
Does this man have any clue what surgeries cost? Does he have any idea what a chemo therapy workup and treatment costs?
Look folks, we can trash hospitals, physicians, pharmaceutical companies all we want, but I don’t think it’s reasoned to think we could get by with $21,900 dollars in premiums for 60 years.
“Some people could...”
Tell me Rand, how do you know which people could? You don’t know until after the year has played out, so how do you figure out which people could when charging premiums?
If you think it’s wise to refund their payments once they don’t have any claims, that might be okay, but then who pays for all the folks who did have claims but were only charged $365 dollars for the year?
I don’t trust Rand any farther than I can drop kick him.
Right now he’s poised to block the Senate Health Care bill. Sounds great until you realize who is going to be blamed for outlandish premium increases and losses of insurance providers. Is that going to be Barack Obama, or is it going to be Donald Trump and our Congress who had the majority for several years and did absolutely nothing to forestall the coming calamity?
Who got blamed for the actions of Congress that brought us the 2008 economic mealtdown? Congress? Bill Clinton?
No, it was George Bush and the Republicans. And then we got Obama.
Are we looking for a second Obama?
Get some health care legislation passed, and do it now idiots.
No, we won’t get what we wanted. Well, up against that reality or the reality that we’ll be out on our asses (or majority lost) if we don’t take action, I’d suggest we take action.
Congress takes care of their own. That’s why they exempted themselves and their aides from Obamacare. They probably only pay $1 a day and we cover the rest.
I believe the senator is making a point about how needlessly expensive medical insurance is due to government interference in the market, rather than that it should be taxpayer subsidized.
Have they exempted themselves from this new bill?
Since Republicans own this pig they have put lipstick on, I think they should be participating.
Does this idiot not realize that insurance companies only pay the claims? They don’t set the prices that medical services providers charge. Medical services providers set the prices that they charge.
In Idaho you can get a worker’s comp policy for about $1 per day, but there is no coverage. You have a policy, but you get no benefits. It is in place only to comply with the state law that says you must have an WC policy. It doesn’t say that the policy needs to cover anything, just that it exists. Maybe that’s what this buffoon is going for.
....He also called for the creation of a healthcare law that would reduce insurance costs to as little as $1 a day...
I can imagine TV infomercials from Florida companies offering health insurance at $1.00 a day PER UNIT. Just like they sell
burial insurance to seniors now.
We expect internet trolls to pull random numbers out of their posteriors (like insurance for $1 a day). We are in trouble when sitting senators do so. It’s not helpful.
We are spending way too much but I don’t see how making wildly inaccurate claims assists in coming up with a reasonable solution.
We should get gasoline for 22 cents a gallon. Next! Don’t know what insurance cost in 1960, but without a gold/silver standard for money, ain’t happening in a capitalistic society. Is Rand Paul showing his socialist colors?
“...government interference.”
There’s your problem. .gov will never get out of the health care arena. Medi whatever is too entrenched.
