PARIS (AFP) -
France is to stop granting new licences for oil and gas exploration on the mainland and in overseas territories, Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot said Friday.
"There will be no new exploration licences for hydrocarbons, we will pass the law this autumn," Hulot said on BFMTV.
President Emmanuel Macron said during his election campaign in February that he was opposed to exploration for gas and shale gas in mainland France.

The French expect that they will be able to get their needed oil and gas from their former colonies or other providers, like the USA. There is an oil and gas glut in the world right now, with the USA being the largest provider. It seems the French think there is no strategic threat to their reliance on foreign oil and gas providers. We shall see.

Well, IIRC, France has 8 oil refineries. So they can do something with the crude. Why take a chance on having your supply reduced/cut off/made unaffordable though? This is nuts.
