As if the Russia probe didn’t feel enough like a soap opera, now comes word that two of the major players have a familial connection. Richard Cullen, partner at McGuireWoods, was recently hired as Mike Pence’s attorney. Turns out Cullen is close with another attorney turned blogging fodder, James Comey. So close, in fact, that Cullen is the godfather to one of Comey’s daughters. As Philly.com reports:
But other parts of his resume attracted even more interest. For three years, Cullen worked at a Richmond law firm with a central figure of the Russia investigation: FBI Director James Comey, who was just fired by Pence’s boss, President Trump.
And not only is Cullen his “close associate,” as news reports described, but he is also the godfather of one of Comey’s daughters.
Fascinating.
The world of truly elite prosecutors and defense attorneys is small, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that there is this personal connection between key players in this national saga. But given the competing interests involved, well, it could make summer barbecues just a little awkward.
Actually, this was probably a pretty smart move on Pence’s part.
I was thinking the same...Pence gets the inside scoop, and Cullen and I’m sure that Cullen will do a decent job, if only to protect his reputation (i.e., $$$$).

For that very reason I have a suspicion that Mueller will do the same. He knows he is under close scrutiny and even if he never did an honest thing in his life before, he will now because I think he knows how to read the tea leaves. He wants to get on the right side of history. (I hope so, anyway) It’s a known fact that a leopard cannot change its spots. I choose to be optimistic once in a while.
Cullen is on the side of whoever is paying him and will use his connections to keep Pence out of this witch hunt. In the world of Washington paying for influence will go a lot farther than paying for pure legal talent.

I’m not sure how to define friendship in those circles. The currency exchange is different. It seems also to be a small circle with lots of currents and shifting allegiances. If Comey has dirt on Cullen or has leverage its an issue. Otherwise maybe not.
