I grew up in the Deep South and my father was a genuine redneck, however, he was also a Christian. He once said to me “ there are good people and bad people, color means nothing”.

I grew up in New England in the 50's and 60's.During the 60's I,like most Americans,saw many stories painting the South as a racial hellhole.

In 1969 I arrived at Fort Knox,KY for BCT.Most of the guys in my company were white and were from Tennessee,Mississippi and Texas.There were also 4 or 5 black guys.

When I saw this I thought to myself..."oh,God...this is gonna be ugly".

But I was wrong.Not a lick of trouble from the white guys *or* the black guys.I guess it was because we all had a common enemy...the DIs.
