Crikey, if true, why would it have performed those maneuvers?

Probably a holding pattern while awaiting pilot.

And you would be completely wrong.

I take back that comment. You might be correct. Seems there is a discrepancy between the what the Japanese say and the Navy says about the actual time of the collision, which would make a big difference.

I haven't seen any news stories that say Fitzgerald rammed ACX Crystal, just that they collided. They both collided with each other, so it doesn't really matter that much which order the words go in. It's the news—they don't know anything about maritime.

The first story I read said that the Navy Ship rammed the container ship. Early stories are often incorrect.

My first conceptions of the incident were based on the report of the call reporting the incident at 2:30am. Now they are saying the collision was at 1:30am.

Regardless to all the above, still one wonders how in the heck this could even happen. There is a missing factor we are not being told about yet.

Here, at least, is one story referring to the news reporting that the Navy ship rammed the container ship.

STRAIGHT STORY: US Navy Destroyer Rammed

"News incorrectly says “US Destroyer rammed Philippine Cargo ship”.

Oddly, I can't find the other original stories that made that statement. Either I'm insane or they scrubbed those articles. (or both)
