Even American carpenters, when building an old fashioned balloon frame house, had enough sense to put in a “fire stop” between the studs to prevent the chimney effect.

If folks want decent housing, public housing should be privatized.

This lie again. Don't like public - go crony capitalist instead. There is no free market in government provided services. The whole notion is an oxymoron.

Fortunately folks are starting to see through the so-called privatization scam.

More like graft. And a contempt for the people the council purports to serve. For instance, I’m wondering if the concern that the tenants would try to impede/impair safety systems installed, say sprinklers or an alarm system, was a consideration in not installing them. Because inspecting the building, making repairs, removing any tenants who screw with the safety systems takes effort, time, and money.

That’s a false choice.

I bought two refrigerators last year that used propane as the refrigerant. Both failed with a week of use but did not explode.

Maybe we need to bring back the old non electric ammonia type that used a very small natural gas flame to make it work.

Benito Obama would refer to it as just a bump on the road to Utopia...

In the past, Ben Franklin wondered about people who would build their homes out of the same fuel they used to cook their food and keep themselves warm in winter.

Well, I’ll grant you government does its level best to ensure that the private sector can’t make much money building/renting safe, affordable low-income housing. So why are you blaming the private sector for that?

Honestly, this click bait story is fake news. Maybe green concerns will turn out to be a primary factor, but it's too soon to tell. It appears to be a failure of government on a few dozen different levels.

Like much of the anti-Trump stories, this "green menace" conjecture is a conclusion in search of a story, designed to generate clicks and outrage.

There are 3 issues: What started the fire, what allowed it to spread so quickly (if it did in fact spread “quickly”), and what caused so many people to remain in the building until it became impossible for them to escape or be rescued.

It would be difficult to design and build an apartment dwelling better suited to roasting large numbers of people alive.
∙ 24 floors
∙ One stairwell
∙ No fire alarm
∙ No sprinkler system
∙ No smoke detection system
∙ Gas throughout - (many high-rise buildings only allow electric stoves, dryers, etc.)
∙ Highly flammable exterior cladding (non-flammable is too expensive)
∙ Plaster & lathe walls inside
∙ Limited access for first responders

The only thing I can think of to make it worse would be aluminum wiring and perhaps storing a few tons of fertizer and diesel fuel in the basement.

Have you noticed there has been no info available on whether or not the building’s electrical system was up to code?

Yes, additionally why no sprinkler system and why were screams the first audible notice that many had that their building was on fire? It appears to be the collective result of an accumulation of bad and/or criminal decisions.

How about the low-flow toilets! There were articles written a few years ago about how she to low flow toilets there wasn’t enough water in the sewage pipes to push it through so it was getting stuck and backed up and causing corrosion and a bad smell so much so they had to pump with bleach down the pipes. LOL
In the end because the environmental movement is about power control it’s not really about fixing things.

My guess as to the origin of the fire is from some Muslim roasting a goat over a gas cooker in their apartment.

This happens frequently in Mecca after Ramadan and they explode killing dozens.

People reported an explosion followed by a raging blaze.

Local media reported that a rep for the council stated that sprinklers weren’t installed because tenants objected. No idea if that’s true. Even if it is, so what? Is it code? If not why? My bet: they have people who cook and/or smoke in that building, and rather than deal with violators, the council gave in. The whole contempt thing again. The contempt of government for the people it purports to serve.
