A modern production of “Julius Caesar” — with an actor made up as Donald Trump getting offed onstage — will continue to play in Central Park as scheduled, the theater company said.

The production — part of the annual Shakespeare in the Park series — has been ripped by the White House since it was mounted Sunday.

You know, has no one connected with the fact that Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' was based on history of real events?

Frank: ‘Yes. Well, when I see five weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That’s *my* policy.’

Mayor: ‘That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of Julius Caesar, you moron! You killed five actors! Good ones.’

Nuts like yesterday’s shooter don’t go off the deep end on their own. They need a push and those in “Julius Caesar” are just doing their part to protect us from Trump. /sarc

You know, has no one connected with the fact that Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' was based on history of real events?

This production of Julius Caesar fails on multiple levels. First, if a director wants to set a Shakespeare play in an era other than the one depicted, or Shakespeare's own time, it is allegedly so that the audience can better understand the play and the characters' motives and relationships with each other. There is no reason that anyone intelligent enough to attend a play would need help in figuring out who the character of Julius Caesar is supposed to be in the context of the play. Replacing someone whom the Roman Senate had declared "dictator for life" bears no resemblance whatsoever to Trump or any American president. So, the attempt to "update" the play for modern audiences is a failure.

Second, the depiction of the violent assassination of Trump/Caesar is obviously merely a political statement that can only encourage violence against the president and his family and supporters. The "Shakespeare in the Park" productions have been a New York staple for decades. These leftist idiots have just flushed all their credibility down the toilet. I don't see how anybody but a rabid leftist would ever attend another of their productions again.

I was a theater major in college. My main area of interest was Shakespeare's plays. I have studied them intently, and after college I acted in and directed some productions of the plays. I doubt I would ever even attend one again. This is the age of "director's theater", in which productions are all about the director's "vision" with no regard to the play. If you see a Shakespeare production today, it will be some BS like a woman Hamlet, or lesbian/gay Romeo & Juliet, or this Trump idiocy, etc. The same is true with opera in which productions are almost always set in a period or place other than where the composers intended. My wife and I used to have opera season tickets. We never go now, and prefer to watch older and better productions on DVD or Blu-ray. The same goes with plays and movies. New ones tend to suck.

Last night, we watched an episode of The Fugitive called “The Glass Tightrope”. Good drama.

It’s time to go post modern on this and embrace the play. After all in the play Caesar is a protagonist not a villain. He has done nothing to harm the Populus Romanum, only to make their lives better. Cassius begins the plot for his own selfish desires and dupes Brutus by invoking the fears that Caesar might bring harm to Rome and the Republic and playing on Brutus’s patriotism. What the Right needs to do is compare impeachment with assassination and have its own Marc Antony to bring the People to Trump’s side by revealing the motives of the Dems as Antony did of Crassus.

I know a lady who was long ago an opera singer who had the same complaints about productions she used to attend in the recent past. She got a call from a company to renew her subscription. She pointed out exactly what you said. The caller agreed but said they weren’t being made for her older generation and then asked if not a subscription maybe a donation. She said to go fornicate themselves.

I was a theatre major too. I’m totally divorced from it now. Last play I saw was a professional staging of “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof” with an all-black cast and tons of profanity added. The direction sucked, the pace dragged like crazy and I left after the first act. Of course the reviews were ecstatic.

Of course it continues. If it was a conservative’s play of beheading an 0bamma lookalike, a federal judge would’ve halted it by now....
