Despite its own many problems, Europe should remain committed to the western Balkans amid renewed tensions stemming from the wars of the 1990s, Germany’s president said Saturday.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke in Slovenia after a European Union-backed meeting of Balkan leaders designed to boost cooperation in the troubled region. A joint statement called for further EU integration, strengthening of dialogue and refraining from “nationalistic and inflammatory rhetoric.”

Steinmeier said in comments translated into English that “the discussion today has shown that the past has not been fully overcome.” He also warned that “what happens in this region and also what doesn’t happen is going to concern us and is going to have an impact on us.” …

They should have taken Bismarck’s advice....

“The Balkans are not worth the healthy bones of a single Pomeranian grenadier.”

The krauts spend all of 1.2 % of GDP on defense. We spend 3.9.

I’m sure the Balkan Muslims will do their dirty deeds for next to free, and by using Germany’s cast-off equipment.

The Balkans is where Germany got started in the last century, helping other countries deal with their problems. And as you say, the Germans did so much good in the last century reaching out to others.

The majority of many categories of German military hardware is not even deployable right now (see article linked below). Their own military reports that up to 50-80% of key categories of planes, tanks, etc. aren’t operational. They have a “hollow” military, even for the overly small size that it is. They can help with some “peacekeeping” force but they are largely incapable of providing serious combat units for sustained operations. NATO is becoming a hollow force aside from the USA’s units.

(note: article linked below mistakenly says President Trump is seeking an increase to 2% of GDP for military spending by NATO members by 2024. That is certainly incorrect. Trump is seeking change RIGHT AWAY, and some such as Merkel have responded by saying they might, maybe, get there by 2024)

Germany started the last Balkan war with their support of Croation secession which could have been solved under the Yugoslavian constitution that had provisions for secession. They then compounded things by plunging into the Bosnia Herzegovina war by still supporting Croatian ambitions and to some extent Moslem ambitions while trying to isolate Serbia. All this and the Lewinsky scandal was a perfect storm for blowing up the Balkans.

“The krauts spend all of 1.2 % of GDP on defense. We spend 3.9.”

I think that’s going to change almost immediately when we quit sending in our checks to NATO. The Germans are just a bunch of freeloaders we’ve carried since the end of WWII. Time we kicked them out of our nest. And don’t get me started on the Frogs, if anything, they’re worse than the Germans.

I agree. Europe is full of so many Muslim freeloaders that they will be fighting their so called refugees damn soon. This British PM is an idiot. Europe was a mess in the late 50’s with De Gualle in France. Soon after France was mostly communist.
