As the days and years pass on, so too shall our freedom because of them.
They shall not grow old, but we will because of them
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn them.
They may be gone, but never the memory of them
.....

Here some quotes about memory and sacrifice, designed to put you a frame of mind to remember the spirit of Memorial Day.

... "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." --Joseph Campbell

... "This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave." --Elmer Davis

... "Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it--memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey." --Ted Williams

... "Own only what you can always carry with you: know languages, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag." --Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

... "The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example." --Benjamin Disraeli

... "It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle." --H. Norman Schwarzkopf

... "I've never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don't understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now." --Sophia Loren

... "He was still too young to know that the heart's memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good, and that thanks to this artifice we manage to endure the burden of the past." --Gabriel García Márquez

... "When the soldiers came home from Vietnam, there were no parades, no celebrations. So they built the Vietnam Memorial for themselves." --William Westmoreland

... "So long as the memory of certain beloved friends lives in my heart, I shall say that life is good." --Helen Keller

... "Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die." --G.K. Chesterton

... "Famous men have the whole earth as their memorial." --Pericles

... "And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier's tomb, and beauty weeps the brave." --Joseph Rodman Drake

... "Ceremonies are important. But our gratitude has to be more than visits to the troops, and once-a-year Memorial Day ceremonies. We honor the dead best by treating the living well." --Jennifer M. Granholm

... "Who kept the faith and fought the fight; The glory theirs, the duty ours." --Wallace Bruce

... "Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going." --Tennessee Williams

... "Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering." --Theodore Roosevelt

... "The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering." --Bruce Lee

... "There are three side effects of acid: enhanced long-term memory, decreased short-term memory, and I forget the third." --Timothy Leary

... "Sharing tales of those we've lost is how we keep from really losing them." --Mitch Albom, For One More Day

... "These men were wrongfully rejected, the veterans. The fighting man should never have been blamed for Vietnam." --Neil Sheehan

... "Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future." --Elie Wiesel

... "Congress should stop treating veterans like they're asking for a hand out when it comes to the benefits they were promised, and they should realize that, were it not for these veterans, there would be nothing to hand out." --Nick Lampson

Here, here. To me it just used to mean a 3 day weekend; now I just find it a day to grieve and give thanks to those who sacrificed.

Too many eMails and store ads in the newspaper and on TV wishing a “Happy Memorial Day” or “Celebrate Memorial Day” to push their products.

Apparently very few in business know (or care about) the true meaning of Memorial Day.

I say save the “Happy” and “Celebrate” for Independence Day - That is not what Memorial Day is about.

Could we maybe remember that "Memorial Day" used to be "Decoration Day" which was a northern States holiday only.

Our real United States memorial day is in November.

Thankfully we finally have a President who cares for the nation and will hopefully help to educate the nation on the glorious example of our wonderful serviceman, both past and present.

Our last three President’s were lazy and selfish. President Trump truly understands and appreciates our forces

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Being a veteran gives a person a different outlook about Memorial Day. Thanks to all those who gave so much in the service of our country.

These are especially moving song lyrics by D. O'Brien. Worth hearing performed, easily found online.

To those who've had to fly and fight,

who have served their country in the sky,

with a grateful heart, and watchful eye,

we remember.

And may the faithful, proud machines,

who bore the sword of freedom on their wings,

be given the honor such a burden brings,

and we remember.

Keep them flying, keep them flying,

so that all who see them will know,

that their freedom was won by the blood that flowed,

and remember.

And all who've coursed through hostile skies,

know that freedom requires a sacrifice,

to those who paid the highest price,

we remember.

With a place of honor so deserved,

for what flesh and blood and steel have earned,

that may the greatest glory be reserved,

for the colors they so bravely served. Keep them flying, keep them flying, so that all who see them will know,

that our freedom was won by the blood that flowed,

and we remember.

YOu are correct, but today we celebrate it in memorial of those fallen, come November we will honor them again along with honoring those who fought and are still with us.

Yes, like all Holidays, it seems they are more about capitalism than the day we are celebrating, but Capitalism is still great.

I consider it still the best option for man to be free on the planet, even the bad is not as bad as the good of other types of economic systems of the world.

The older I get, the more I would rather stay home and celebrate it for what it was meant to b celebrated for.
