He said that a few weeks ago he had to go to church alone because you were feeling a little under the weather. He went on to say that he was sitting in the church with his fellow worshipers listening to the pastor preach his sermon for the day when all of a sudden there was lightning and thunder. Then out of nowhere up popped the devil and with his booming, intimidating voice said, "IN THIRTY SECONDS I AM GOING TO WAVE MY HAND AND KILL EVERYONE WHO IS STILL IN THIS CHURCH!" Man, your husband said that people were stumbling over each other getting out of that church! The ones who could not reach the door jumped out of the windows! Even the pastor jumped out of the closest window!
After the church had emptied the devil looked around, got a wry, self-satisfied smile on his face and said, "HAH! I STILL HAVE THE POWER!"
However, the devil then noticed that your husband was still sitting there with a look of peace and tranquility on his face. The devil went to him and said, "I AM THE DEVIL AND CAN KILL YOU WITH A SIMPLE WAVE OF MY HAND!" Your husband simply looked up at the devil and said, "I am not afraid of you!" The devil asked, "You do not fear me?" Your husband answered, "No, I do not fear you! You are nothing!"
The devil then asked, "Why do you not fear me?"
Your husband answered, "Look, man! I do not fear you! You are nothing! You have no power! Compared to your sister you are nothing and I have been married to her for 50 years!"

Long after the Big Bands died away, Basie continued to soldier on and pack houses nationwide. This is from 1940 when Basie’s band was one of the hotter bands around.
USS Thresher also went away but its odd that Scorpion and Sqaulus happened in the same week in different decades.
This 12 minute set is from the Christmas 1949 “Jazz at the Philharmonic” series in New York. That’s Bird with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young.
