Once I finish with Gershwin and Kern, I’ll probably tackle Rodgers.

I wonder what music the Revolutionary war Patriots listened to. It might give some insights into the mindset of those that wrote the Constitution and Laws.

Good evening, Publius, and thank you for Rachmaninov’s “The Star Spangled Banner”.

A few years ago I spent a Memorial Day weekend with songs of the Civil War, and on Independence Day I did the songs of the Revolution. Both sides!

Both weekends provided songs from the English folk tradition, which is the root of our music.

I’ve been looking on You Tube for that Master Class, but I can’t find it.

He was wonderful with his students who eagerly answered his questions and asked some, but mostly sat there in AWE. :-)

He showed how he used the lyrics to determine the intervals, rhythm, note values etc, to paint the lyrics with the melody.

I had been writing songs for years, but that half hour changed everything! :-)

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

GIRL CRAZY

FATS WALLER: “I GOT RHYTHM”

Fats’ band tackled this gem in 1935. It was the Thirties version of Fifties R&B, something aimed for a black audience that white afficionados could appreciate.

I think I saw it on CBS on a Sunday afternoon when it was first broadcast back in the Sixties.

We are losing a lot of history.

Speaking of Fats Waller:

The preparation for the Canteen for both Memorial Day weekend and Independence Day weekend taught me a lot about our music. I learned a great deal.

Most of our English folk tradition survives in Country music today.

That Fats Waller tune was a favorite of Dr. Demento.

The Richard Rodgers episode came from "American Musical Theater," which CBS ran on Sunday afternoons in the Sixties.
