I think before we get to that step, just make all the passengers disrobe before boarding.

Dang it! I have to fly....hopefully with my laptop...in July. Domestic flight though. As if dealing with the airlines isn’t already annoying enough!

Can’t bring a laptop on a flight, you might watch a movie on it or listen to an album.

That’s like bringing snacks into a movie theater, they need the revenue from the headphones...

This is ridiculous.. and, I predict, will cause a backlash severe enough to make them drop it before it last more than a day.

“While that will be annoying, it makes sense. Most people have no idea about the amount of energy stored in typical laptop batteries. It is a LOT.”

indeed. makes far more sense to stow 100s of laptops amid massive piles of flammable materials in the hold under the floor where no one can see or smell a fire or even get to the fire, instead of having a fire start in an overhead bin where it would be instantly detected and easily put out with handily available fire extinguishers operated by trained personnel instantly on the spot.

Yeah, because the airplanes don’t have fire detection and suppression systems in their holds. Better to burn up a few passengers. /need I?

Banning the wrong thing.

Sorry, but there will be business travelers to use their laptops. They will be preapproved. For a fee.

Not just laptops, but today’s smart phones as well. Their batteries are almost as powerful as laptops.

It would make more sense to let the airlines hire their own security. Airlines could proudly post their “pending lawsuits from Muslim group” statistics as a yardstick to measure who was the safest.

Exactly - so many ridiculous gyrations to avoid the necessary profiling.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Better to have a fire start in the cargo hold where it can get a really good start than have it start where people can see it and put it out, not. If I’m not mistaken the Lockerbie bomb was in a radio in the cargo hold.

Not just laptops, but no tablets or phones. The challenge will be that airlines have been widely adopting a BYOD to access video entertainment on flights, which this undermines. Will be curious to see how they address. Alaska airlines hands them out to enable passengers to watch things. Don’t recall if free or charged, suspect the latter.

Yes, in the pre-TSA days, they did this when I was traveling with a slow to start and shut down UNIX laptop. Had to stand by for it to do so or risk corrupting it.
