Trump stirs pot with talk of blowing up Senate rules

As a gridlocked Congress threatens to stall the legislative promises that catapulted him to office, President Trump has raised hackles on the Hill by suggesting longstanding Senate rules simply be scrapped to cripple Democratic opposition.

Trump has twice in the past week railed against “archaic” Senate procedures – first in an interview with Fox News and then again on Twitter – seeming to suggest the legislative filibuster be ended to take advantage of Republicans’ control of Congress.

“And maybe at some point we're going to have to take those rules on, because, for the good of the nation, things are going to have to be different,” Trump said on “The First 100 Days” on Friday. “You can't go through a process like this. It's not fair. It forces you to make bad decisions. I mean, you're really forced into doing things that you would normally not do except for these archaic rules.”

All those “rules” do is allow Senators to avoid doing the work.

The “rules” give each Senator time to do their real job: Fund Raising!

Stir the Pot Mr President. Reminds me of the telegram Lincoln sent to Grant on April 7, 1865: Gen. Sheridan says “If the thing is pressed I think that Lee will surrender.” Let the thing be pressed. A. LINCOLN.

Mr Trump, let the thing be pressed!

If they’re going to keep the filibuster, then require that they do it the old fashioned way: Keep talking until they drop.

To anybody?

How long standing?

I heard somewhere only since the early 90s. Is that correct?

If Republicans don’t do it and Democrats block the Trump agenda, they’ll get back in and promise they won’t hesitate to make it 51.

The Senate can exalt the country or the Senate can exalt Senate rules.

That bears repeating. If they are indeed able to block Trump, they will _instantly_ change the rules to their benefit just as soon as they can.

Don't fall for it President Trump. Shut it down.

I think President Trump is out of his depth on this one -- or at least he's making it seem that way.

Forget about the filibuster. There aren't even 51 votes in the U.S. Senate to get 10% of Trump's agenda passed.

Although there are constitutional exceptions to this prohibition, the Constitution’s Article V prohibits the Senate from unequal state votes without the consent of a state.
Article V: The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate [emphasis added].

So noting that us voters “own” the Senate through the 17th Amendment (or does the Senate “own” us voters though that amendment?), since the "nonlinear” 60 vote supermajority is not an express constitutional requirement, I don’t see where it is constitutional under Article V.

Corrections, insights welcome.

Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!

Remember in November ’18 !

Since Trump entered the ’16 presidential race too late for patriots to make sure that there were state sovereignty-respecting candidates on the primary ballots, patriots need make sure that such candidates are on the ’18 primary ballots so that they can be elected to support Trump in draining the unconstitutionally big federal government swamp.

Such a Congress will also be able to finish draining the swamp with respect to getting the remaining state sovereignty-ignoring, activist Supreme Court justices off of the bench.

In fact, if Justice Gorsuch turns out to be a liberal Trojan Horse then we will need 67 patriot senators to remove a House-impeached Gorsuch from office.

Noting that the primaries start in Iowa and New Hampshire in February ‘18, patriots need to challenge candidates for federal office in the following way.

While I Googled the primary information above concerning Iowa and New Hampshire, FReeper iowamark brought to my attention that the February primaries for these states apply only to presidential election years. And after doing some more scratching, since primary dates for most states for 2018 elections probably haven’t been uploaded at this time (March 14, 2017), FReepers will need to find out primary dates from sources and / or websites in their own states.

Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitution’s Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal government’s powers.

Patriots also need to find candidates that are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal government’s limited powers listed below.

Trump should just warn them that starting Sept 1 he will veto anything related to keeping the government open until the rules are changed.

Plus the list of GOPe Senators adds at least 5 votes to the dems.

What if they have the votes to overturn that veto?

You are correct. Trump needs to point this out and destroy people like McCain & Graham. The two bedwetters are only staying in this to make money and decimate Trump.

President Trump is right. The 60 rule makes no sense and should be returned to the majority, 51. The Senate is the no nothing organization and will never do what is right for America again.
