USDA to ease school meal standards

Newly minted Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue is expected to unveil a new rule Monday aimed at giving schools more flexibility in meeting federal nutrition standards for school lunches.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Friday that Perdue and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) will make the announcement at the Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Va., where they are expected to eat lunch with the students.

Republicans have long been trying to dial back the standards that became a pillar of former first lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to curb childhood obesity in the U.S.

Roberts introduced legislation with Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) last year to give schools two more years to meet new reductions on sodium, but the bill never passed.

Renewed efforts to ease the federal standards came as disappointing news to some advocates.

The “pillar” of the mooch was to starve these and make them miserable. Why the government needs their grubby paws in people’s diets in the first place is idiotic.

I couldn’t believe the pictures of the school lunches taken by a friend’s son at our local high school. It was inhumane.

We always brought our lunches to school in these metal boxes — we called them “lunch boxes”. Our moms decided what we would eat, and that is what we got. That system worked without having to plunder the working taxpayers and without having to torture the kids.

Homemade cookies for snack time, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a carton of school provided milk for lunch.

Time to tear up Michelle’s fake vegetable garden (photo-op) and make a clean sweep of it.

there is no food in most of these kids’ homes, much less anyone to pack their lunch for them

Then the parents should lose all public assistance and be charged with child neglect.

The children should be taken into custody and placed in decent foster homes.

I’ve read some horror stories about schools confiscating lunches that don’t meet their standards...giving the kid a school lunch...and sending the parents a bill.

“The children should be taken into custody and placed in decent foster homes.”

What world are you living in?

Dumb question: Has any aspiring reporter ever bothered to check whether or not Mooch’s meals had any success in reducing childhood obesity?

Or is ‘trying’ considered success?

My Post 11: “The children should be taken into custody and placed in decent foster homes.”

Your Response: "What world are you living in?

My Answer:

One that would like to see hungry, neglected children removed from a home where they are not cared for or fed and placed into an environment where they are.

Remember, my original post #12 - the one you questioned - is in response to this post:

"there is no food in most of these kids’ homes, much less anyone to pack their lunch for them"

That's post #11 in this thread if you care to go back and put this all in context.
