Republican legislators want to keep popular Obamacare provisions for themselves and their staff.

House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts Members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan. The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacare’s ban on pre-existing conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.

Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) who authored this amendment confirmed this was the case: members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping this Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged me to this particular issue.

No.

They probably want their kids to stay covered until they’re 43, or whatever the absurd age is in obamacare.

I’m appalled. Is this an attempt by fake Republicans to sink the reform bill? Or is it out-of-control arrogance?

Not surprised they’re exempting themselves. No one should be exempt. If a person has more medical needs, they pay higher insurance - same as having to pay higher car insurance if you have more tickets or accidents. However there should be income based subsidies for people having to pay higher health ins. premiums.

Just as important : Medical costs need to come down. They’re outrageous.

I am not surprised but confused. I seem to recall that the Constitution prohibits passage of laws to which legislators are not subject.

As some wit once said, asking the Republicans to govern is like asking Barney Frank to judge the Miss America contest. If the interest isn’t there to begin with then the results aren’t going to be that great.

Medical insurance should only cover catastrophic issues. Cancer, heart disease, kidney transplants, etc. Everyone should have to pay for their own broken arms, torn Achilles tendons, birth control, Viagra, etc.
