High-powered aides to Donald Trump pressed for funding of a Mexico border wall Sunday as a looming spending showdown in Congress threatens to shut down the US government on the president's 100th day in office.
Building the wall was Trump's signature campaign promise, and the White House appeared determined to get Congress to approve a down payment as part of a bigger bill to keep the US government funded.
White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney said the administration is prepared to make concessions to Democrats on health care reform in order to get the wall money.
But if the wall isn't funded, will the president veto the larger spending bill, risking a government shutdown on Saturday -- coincidentally Trump's 100th day in office?
"Don't know yet," Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday. "We are asking for our priorities and importantly we are offering to give Democrats some of their priorities as well."
The specter of a government shutdown has often loomed over US budget negotiations. The threat has most often been averted -- but has come to pass several times, most recently for 16 days in 2013 amid a dispute over funding for Barack Obama's signature health care reforms.

I will just say Mr. Trump:
A government shut-down, would divert the media’s attention from the 100 days agenda.
(which I don’t recall actually the media, ever talking about before now)
Duke it out with the left on this issue.
People want the wall.
A lot of people. The people who elected you.
Don’t worry. Your government check will still come in
if a shut down occurs over Border Wall Funding.
Its called, negotiating. Its part of the art of the deal. Watch and learn.
Most all the media is, as usual, discussing a possible shutdown as if it would be the Republicans who shut the government down. The president and members of the party really need to turn that around and present it, loudly, as the Dims shutting down the government over one or two billion to begin the border wall, which many of them voted for in the form of the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (including Schumer, Hillary, Obama and many others).
Of course, some key Republicans in Congress would have to grow a spine on this situation for the first time in their careers.
Fund the wall!
Not bad! The original version, from about 1972 or so, was just a bit better though in my opinion.
Call their bluff, Mr. President!
Veto any bill without the Wall.
Amen.
It is a brilliant strategy
$1 for Obamacare subsidies for $1 of Wall. Obama care is dying of Natural Causes as we speak and Dems want to avoid that. They hope Trump and GOP won’t get their act together and then Obamacare-fix comes into play if the word Repeal gets dropped. Won’t happen.
Let the Dems take the hit for not making a deal and Obamacare dies faster and then we have sob stories of people losing their insurance. Why? Because “Resist” won’t be popular when Joe Citizen takes a hit.
Let them eat it when Obamacare implodes,
If congress won’t allocate the funds then shut the government down. Or do a private funding with gifts from citizens.
The NAU open borders globalist nevertrumper roaches’ strategy now is to try and sweep the wall, border security and halting the invasion under the rug each year.
They have the nerve of burglars in trying this, in trying to thwart the issue that won candidate Trump the office.
They crave that cheap labor and all that comes with it, Americans be damned. Border security is their bete noir. If they win on this, we’re completely screwed.
This is a simple matter. Congress agrees to include real funding for a wall or President Trump uses his veto.
If they do fund, but it isn’t quite enough—like Zero writing the UN two 500 million checks for fighting global warming in 3rd world countries, President Trump can get out his US Treasury checkbook and cover the difference.
Shut it down.
And say (over and over and over):
“The democrats shut down the government because they want open borders.”
Trump wins that battle.
If there are enough patriots Republicans in the House, a bill that funds the wall will pass in the House.
So, isn’t the real issue here that Senate Democrats will try to fillibuster the budget bill passed by the House?
Option 1: Make the Democrats mount a REAL fillibuster. Let them talk themselves hoarse and reveal themselves to be the silly puppets of special interests.
Option 2: NUKE the non-constitutional fillibuster for Budget Bills.
Sigh. They never learn. Appeasement never works.
