Two things I have NEVER eaten...Mush and Grits, and I lived in the Mountain west, and south.
Corn bread, yes.
Wheat farina, yes.
Home made biscuits, yes.

My mom, from the back hills of Tennessee, Never made girts or mush.

My Maternal Grandfather lived in Florida but owned land in both Florida and Geneva County, Alabama.

Growing up, Mother made grits for breakfast probably 90% of the time. I love grits but not by their self. They mix with other foods, especially sausage and eggs.

I don’t recall her ever making them for any meal but breakfast. My late wife never could get them just right and I am even worse.

I was in the hospital in Geneva, Alabama a few months ago getting a skin cancer removed from my neck. I had to be there at 6 A.M.. After I had gotten over the fairly long surgery, it was around 8.

They ordered a breakfast for me and it came just as I was being released. They let me take it with me and I had it when I got home.

Someone in that hospital really knows how to cook grits. The eggs and bacon were also great.

we had to start serving 100 percent whole grains

What part of grits - ground hominy corn - is not whole grain, or are we discriminating against corn these days.

...haven't "grits" been declared racist yet?

If you're not from the South, you can be forgiven for not knowing that black folks love them some grits.

:>)

In the uppity circles of the elites, they call grits by the Italian name of polenta.

No matter, grits is fine - Just call me when eatin’ time is here.

When I was in Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps, we sold a bumper sticker that had our Delta logo and ‘Grits - Breakfast of Champions’

Fried mush is the bomb, with butter and maple syrup. You buy a loaf of it at the grocery, slice it and fry it. Serve with bacon, sausage, ham or even Spam on the side.

Grits are like liquid popcorn. What’s not to love?

Give them try sometime!

Back in the sixties, Daddy was stationed in yankee land (Scott AFB, Ill). Momma had friends send us grits.

I understand that, in the South, blacks and whites even get together to sing about grits. Always in perfect hominy.

Grits are always plural.

As an acronym G.R.I.T.S. stands for Girls Raised In The South.

You would probably like my Shrimp Grits.

I make the grits with shrimp stock.

The chef is here. Good eats for everyone.

My grandmother makes grits with American cheese and bakes in ramekins.. my only experience with them. Most of TX except along the LA border doesn’t really do classic Southern dishes except as a novelty.

Back in 1957 I attended Squadron Officer School at Maxwell AFB, in Montgomery, AL. Every restaurant I ate at served grits for breakfast. First time I had eaten them. My wife started serving them with ground beef and onions.

Sounds yummy. We used to make grits and grunts which is a small tasty fish down in the keys. My sister and I make pan fried crappie and grits too. :-)

I grew up in Mass, born in the Inter mountain West never had grits until I went into the Army. They were good but not on the par with the fried potatoes I grew up with at breakfast.

I sent my daughter to UA to learn manners and the cook at a track stop I used to go to made the best grits I have ever tasted. Got the recipe and have made them ever since.
