All 11 French presidential candidates have made their final pitches in the last set-piece TV encounter ahead of Sunday's first round of voting.

Both far-right leader Marine Le Pen and radical leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon voiced sharp criticism of the EU in the early part of the program.

The TV encounter was then overshadowed by a deadly shooting in central Paris.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron and center-right Francois Fillon both paid tribute to the police targeted by a gunman.....

Mr. Fillon said he was cancelling all his campaign events on Friday, the final day of the campaign.

Ms Le Pen said she was doing likewise.

Opinion polls suggest a tight race with some 30 percent of voters still undecided.....

The latest terrorist attack in France targeted police as the presidential candidates debated.

A poll was taken earlier this year showing that over 50 percent of police in France planned to vote for Le Pen.

That number may be higher now.

Who knows that the jihadists might do next with the election imminent?

The polling is skewed against Marine Le Pen but the poll that matters is coming in 48 hours.

The fate of Europe rides on this election....if Le Pen wins France starts to claw back its dignity & engage in the long fight to take back the nation. if Le Pen wins the EU is dead, and Europe at large will start to function again & have a chance to save itself. Make no mistake....this is an historic vote. Even if Le Penn wins the evil of Western self-loathing is as strong as the rise of Islam. The long fight is just starting.

Both far-right leader xxx and radical leftist yyy...

Doesn't the bbc have an editorial page for these adjectives?

Oh, must be a cost-saving measure, to combine news and editorials... I get it.

The current police attack, in my opinion, all but solidified a Marine Le Pen WIN!

Time for the French National Anthem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIxOl1EraXA

Arise, children of the Nation,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us tyranny’s
Bloody banner is raised.

Do you hear, in the countryside,
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They’re coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

To arms, citizens,
Form your battalions,
Let’s march, let’s march!
Let an impure blood
Soak our fields!

They went from quite politically savvy to DISASTROUSLY politically inept mighty quickly.

Helped get Trump elected, though it’s a HEARTBREAKING reason we got an edge.

And now they may have sealed it for Le Pen

With at least a quarter of the population undecided...I don’t think anything is really sure at this point.

Even if you get Le Pen and the Communist Party candidate down for the final election on 7 May...it’s possible that forty-percent of the public may just stay home and NOT vote. It’s be awful hard to use any poll and make an outcome prediction based only on sixty-percent of the population.

And let’s not forget....this only fixes up the Presidential race....you have to wait five weeks after that for the legislative election in June. You could easily have some very different results in the legislative election.

.I don’t think anything is really sure at this point.

The ONLY sure things are DEATH and TAXES.

My POV is simply that what happened is Paris is what the common voter is MOST prone to respond to, in favor of Pen, who wants to stop migration of Muslim refugees immediately.

The second round of the presidential election should set a pattern for the parliamentary election to follow, one would expect.

Once the President is decided, the voters you would expect to stay consistent so their government is not confused.

The President of France names the Prime Minister and has powers to dismiss the National Assembly if needed. Its a more powerful presidency than the American one.

The polls all said Trump was going to lose.

I suspect Le Pen will hit 30 percent in the first round with her real support hidden by the pollsters.

The only question is how fudged up their second round estimates are.

Le Pen may be close to winning that if accurate figures were available.

The only thing I see as changed is this stupid comment that Macron made in the last 24 hours: .....“imponderable” threat that “will be a fact of daily life in the coming years.”

He was referring to the future ahead and that French people just need to accept the fact that terrorism is part of their lifestyle, and nothing can be done to change that.

Personally, I think it was awful stupid to say that at this junction of the election. Fillon and Melenchon are maybe just 2 points behind Macron. Either could move up and overtake Macron.

The worst combo for Le Pen, I think, is that Fillon and Le Pen are the final two. If so....maybe fifty percent of the public might stay home and not vote. Trying to guess an outcome with half of the voters not involved...would be awful hard to imagine. Fillon, if you remember....vows that he’ll fire 500,000 civil workers for France. So that’s a plus-point for Le Pen.

One other odd piece in this election is that a large assortment of gays have come out and voiced approval for Le Pen and National Front. Some polls indicate that younger voters are also attracted to the National Front. If you had suggested those two key groups back five years ago helping Le Pen win, people would have laughed at you.
