Arkansas wants to kill inmates with drugs for the living

When administered as their manufacturers intend, the three drugs Arkansas could use in lethal injections next week — if courts allow the executions to proceed — are key products of the pharmaceutical industry. They produce amnesia for patients heading into medical procedures, relax muscles to the point that they don’t interfere with knife-wielding surgeons and regulate heart rhythms in cardiac patients. A state judge ruled Friday that Arkansas cannot inject inmates with the muscle relaxant currently on hand until he addresses a complaint that prison officials obtained the drug improperly. He set a hearing for Tuesday; the executions were due to start Monday. The companies that produced the drugs have said they don’t want their products used in executions. […]

At normal adult doses of around 4 mg, midazolam can slow or stop breathing to the point that medical literature advises doctors to monitor patients closely. With a 500 mg dose listed in the state’s execution protocol, Arkansas expects that the inmates will not be aware they are dying. […]

The typical dose (of vecuronium bromide) is up to .1 mg/kg intravenously, or 8.5 mg for the typical inmate set to die this month. Under Arkansas’ protocol, executioners will administer 100 mg, or more than 11 times the typical dose. […]

[Dr. Joel Zivot of Emory University] said the drug (potassium chloride) is typically given in doses of 20 milliequivalents over several hours. Arkansas plans to use 240 mEq immediately after the inmate is injected with vecuronium bromide. “It’s not only painful, it’s caustic,” Zivot testified. “It will destroy the vein as it passes along its length.” …

“It will destroy the vein as it passes along its length.”

They no longer need the vein.

Bullets are cheap, can be locally produced by anyone named “Bubba”, and work. So are ropes.

It is stupid to go to all this expense and hassle to be meaninglessly humane to those condemned of infamous crimes.

But, hey, if you gotta be “humane” and waste money doing it then let us drop 20 ton flat rocks on them which would be blindingly quick. Clean up around the edges afterwards and no need to bury.

The nonsense over being “humane” to hardened criminals is due to the continually-misinterpreted-by-liberal-judges “cruel and unusual punishment” clause of the Eighth Amendment. Anything that doesn’t preserve the body perfectly without any whiff of suffering has to suddenly be “cruel and unusual” of course.

#2: "Just use Fentanyl."

Tonight Tucker said that 33,000 people die of opioid overdose every year. Let's make it 33,007. And they'd be feelin' no pain.

They act as if the standard is “cruel or unusual”.

Community service for some crimes may be very unusual but are hardly cruel and the death penalty for crimes for which it has been appropriate since the founding of the country are not “unusual” no matter how cruel.

Hypobaric chamber? Like used in the military to familiarize pilots with the effects of altitude and oxygen deprivation. They lower the air pressure, you get a little loopy, then really loopy, then you pass out, and eventually, you’re dead. No drugs, no mess, no fuss.

Why the hell can’t they just use nitrogen? It’s quick and painless.

This is just so damn stupid. I can list you many ways to kill in an execution that are totally painless and do not need physical trauma. The fact we use drugs that are also used in medicinal uses causes the anti death people group to scream “unethical use” of pharmaceutical products. They may have a point but okay I will offer the following alternatives.

1. Nitrogen. Put the evil doer in a chamber and fill it with nitrogen and no oxygen. Cheap and easy. The hunger for breath is driven by CO2 levels in the blood. The evil doer will have no pain but just go to sleep and die.

2. Barometric chamber. Just keep reducing the air pressure and as #1 above, you go to sleep and die.

3. Freon. Freon is also an extremely powerful anesthetic gas that will put you to sleep forever. In fact we use gases that are very similar for sedation during surgery. You will feel light headed, you body will tingle, and the lights will go out forever.

4. Carbon Monoxide works quite nicely also. A small Briggs and Straton engine, a hose to the chamber and a very painless death. Unfortunately you will be very red when dead. You really will and this is just chemistry.

5.The above are the painless and humane. Actually there are many others that are also painless and humane. To many to list. However for the truly evil the concept of death by Carbon Dioxide is very just. If in a pure environment of Carbon Dioxide your desire to breath goes into overdrive. You will breath deeply and as fast as you can. The CO2 will turn into Carbonic Acid in your lungs and burn with an insane pain at which your body will react and make your breath more and more. It only takes a couple of minutes of hell.

Inert gasses. Strap them down, face mask, asphyxiation, pass out within 45 seconds. No pain. Easily procured, always available. Inexpensive.
