A former Cape and Islands state senator on Tuesday called for a movement to purge as many guns out of society as possible, and pushed for a sweeping overhaul of gun laws.
The first thing to do is stop manufacturing and selling them, and the second thing to do is have a very lucrative buyback-and-confiscation program, Dan Wolf, a Harwich-based Democrat who served three terms with the Massachusetts Legislature, said at a Grandmothers Against Gun Violence meeting.
Wolf, the CEO of the independent regional airline Cape Air and a past gubernatorial candidate, was invited by the nonprofit organization to speak at Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis. He urged attendees to pursue civil disobedience beyond organized marches, noting his own prior arrests for what he called passive, nonviolent resistance.
My plea to you is you have to make it an existential issue for the politicians, you have to block the halls to their office, Wolf said. Theres nothing more attractive than an old woman getting arrested, he added, a remark that drew laughs from the grandmother-dominated crowd.
This year alone, there have been almost 15,000 incidents of gun violence in America, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. Since 2014, 346 people have been killed by guns in Massachusetts. Yet while fewer people are fatally shot here than anywhere else in the country, enough cases exist to reflect a desperate state of cyclical poverty which must be confronted before widespread gun violence can be addressed, Wolf said. Part of that should involve busing students into Cape Cod during the summer, he added, which would both satisfy youth unemployment and provide businesses with adequate seasonal help in lieu of using H-2B visa workers from overseas.
I know what a scourge this is, Judith Page of Sandwich, who attended the meeting, told the Barnstable Patriot. I think he certainly is admirable in what hes trying to do, but thats going to take a whole lot more people to start feeling like that and willing to run for office, which is hard to do.
Grandmothers Against Gun Violence formed in 2013 after the shooting deaths of children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut. We are not political; we are for safety, said Kathleen Glueck, the groups former president and grandmother of a student who attended Sandy Hook.
The groups next featured speaker, on May 2, will be Attorney General Maura Healey, who last year announced her offices crackdown on the ban on assault weapons and sales of copycat guns.

Does his audience seriously believe that they, or anyone else, will get away with blocking government offices......once the last of the firearms have been wrested from the hands of the people?
It’s a small world. I was born and raised in Barnstable county and my dad was the owner of Cape and Islands Real Estate, a one-man show he ran for 30 years.
I also had a distant relative who was also a past owner of Cape Air airlines and did some jail time for some sort of fraud he committed there. So being CEO of Cape Air doesn’t impress me.
Maybe this guy forgets the history of the Plimouth colony where every family had a musket.
if the ‘HiAnus’ Libs ever try and confiscate our guns they had better bring the Army . They’ll need it
The world’s biggest lies:
The check is in the mail.
I love you, no sh#t.
Nobody wants to take away your guns.
Why doesn’t Dan Wolf block the entrances to NRA headquarters in northern Virginia?
Everybody who owns a gun should march right over to his office and give it to him.
Each state should be moved to establish a State Second Amendment Militia, admitting every citizen driver's license holder as an active duty militia member with full privileges to own, carry, and conceal any weapon normally available to a US Army field platoon. Each member shall have the right, power and authority to maintain and own as extensive a full range of ammunition and supplies for such weapons as appropriate in the sole discretion of such member.
To the extent legislation can be promoted to this end, it will serve as a significant obstacle to the confiscation and control objectives of the national government and its controllers.
Lucrative for whom? The cops who will have their pick of pieces that have been confiscated?
"Yeah...here's your $25 gift card to Whole Foods. Now gimme that Colt Python."
Those are just the “G” rated ones.
Grandmothers Against Gun Violence, I wonder what they have to say about the criminals? Are they against them as well (I hope)?
Our rights are fixed. We are endowed by our Creator with essential human rights. Governments may try to limit or infringe on them but they are firmly fixed within the hearts and minds of men.
Though, I will agree with the second part of your premise.
The first thing to do is stop manufacturing and selling them

Well, MA has done a pretty good job of that, most gun manufacturers have left. Many are not allowed to sell their guns in MA.
Yes we all know that guns cause poverty. I spend all my money on guns and ammo and am always broke.
Check out article and esp. # 8 .
Thanks, David.
Doubtful, they’re most likely the same grandmothers seen on the news, “why did he have to die? He was a good boy, getting it together, going back to school, turning his life around.” I wish these grandmothers had as much compassion for the victims of their “good boy” grandsons.
It is so shameful that the state that was once the cradle of liberty is now the petri dish of subordination.
Interesting. Cape Air is the only airline servicing Cape Girardeau, MO. I have thought about the advantages of using the service rather than the 2-hour drive and long-term parking in St Louis. I guess I’ll keep driving.
Confiscation causes gun violence.
Unfortunately, it seems prudent to understand that concept is subject to generational trends. See, for instance, the increasingly progressive university complex and the recent majority popular vote for what was a quite obviously unqualified presidential candidate, H. Clinton.
Davids concept of establishing Second Amendment Militia's has merit just on the face of it and could be an important element of any Article V convention.
The states could accomplish the action of their own volition, of course, while the Article V aspect would tie it unmistakenly to the 2Ad and place it beyond the federal judiciary.
