Beijing has reason to be pleased with how the Trump-Xi meet went
China Post (TAIWAN) ^ | 13 April 2017 | Frank Ching

Posted on 04/13/2017 8:47:03 PM PDT by AmericanInTokyo

Chinese leader Xi Jinping's two-day summit meeting with Donald Trump, overshadowed by the U.S. attack on Syria, gave each president the chance to take the measure of the other and, apparently, each liked what he saw. From the Chinese perspective, things went very well indeed, with China taking the initiative and the Americans going along.

It wasn't supposed to be like that. Trump had plans to pressure Xi to reduce the U.S. trade deficit. Trump also expected Xi to "step up" and help rein in North Korea. Neither thing happened.

From the beginning, China felt it had the situation under control. Rex Tillerson had shown willingness to placate China by adopting its vocabulary — "no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation" — to describe the relationship.

A major commentary published in the People's Daily April 1, was headlined "Xi Jinping's big diplomatic move draws global attention."

It discussed Xi's state visit to Finland, followed by his tete-a-tete in Palm Springs with Donald Trump. This, the official party paper indicated, was Xi's initiative.

Indeed, the Mar-a-Lago meeting was a big diplomatic move by Xi. After months in which Trump, first as candidate, then as president-elect, and finally as president, castigated China for "raping" the U.S., for "stealing" American jobs and then announcing that he might depart from the "One China" policy adopted by the U.S. since the 1970s, China decided that it had to rein him in.

Beijing's first notable success was when Trump promised Xi over the phone that he would abide by the "One China" policy after all.... (Exerpt)

This meeting should have been put off for a few more months.

They are also NOT to be trusted on North Korea. Not now. Not ever.

We are liable only to get screwed in these "deals", just as in the past.

Trump was played. China gets its pet North Korea to act all crazy, the US freaks and ask China to take care of it. China says sure, just don’t speak of trade deficits or currency manipulation. Trump says it’s a deal! Now we can all go back to sleep.

To top it all off, they are buying US coal for steelmaking after not doing it for the last 10+ years.

Absolutely right.

Additional commentary aligning with this viewpoint (i.e. China came out ahead in these meetings/Trump reversed/100 day plan is a big classic Chinese style stall: 时间停顿) is in our own media, as well in the Japanese-language domestic conservative or moderate media over the last few days and morning talk shows here such as Tokudane, etc, in case you have not noticed it. These sources are far from being "pro-PRC." What's your point?

The CCP are saying Xi told Trump that the Norks will use nukes of one sort or another on the South if the US tries anything.

From ChiCom mouthpiece Global Times

Washington overstretches on Syria, N.Korea fronts
Source:Global Times Published: 2017/4/13 0:08:40

At the invitation of US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday talked over phone with Trump on bilateral relations as well as issues of the Korean Peninsula and Syria. The phone conversation came shortly after the Mar-a-Lago meeting, which indicates the communication mechanism between the two leaders is working efficiently.

- - -

Taking military actions against North Korea is much more risky than launching a missile strike on Syria. Pyongyang is able to deal a heavy blow to South Korea. Regardless of Pyongyang’s nuclear capability, a radiological dispersal device, or a “dirty bomb,” if thrown on the South, will cause nuclear pollution, which will be unbearable to this US ally.

Once the Syrian and Peninsula issues deteriorate significantly, major power relations will face a severe test. The situation will be out of control in the event of a major strategic misjudgment. But it’s pretty sure that Washington hasn’t prepared itself for the worst-case scenario.

The US has no power to put global affairs in order at the moment. The White House needs to be aware of this reality. Washington seems to be poised to extend its battle line now, which however may not be what it desires.

No matter it’s about toppling Assad or militarily forcing Pyongyang to surrender, it cannot be achieved in a short time. The strategic circle of Washington has underestimated the uncertainties.

That’s been the con for a long time.

Actually the sources you mention are quite pro-PRC in that they are pro-status quo.

At any rate, it was a two day event in Mar-A-Lago with the PRC. I award the edge to Trump on Day One. But Xi gets Day Two. Trump did some good psywar theatrical head game tactics on that first day that had me laughing.

However, that being said, I think it was a split decision. I cant easily go with the line that somehow this was a major coup by the President against China. Sorry.

So the CCP write that article where Trump and Xi talked a couple days after the Florida meetings.

And the message was North Korea will use dirty bombs or more against the South if the US tries anything against Kim.
