You're taking it out of context': ... only Islamic scholars should interpret (trunc)

A Muslim educator has argued only Islamic scholars should interpret the Quran after a video surfaced of Islamic women condoning domestic violence.

The video showed female members of the hardline political group Hizb ut-Tahrir describe beating women as a 'beautiful blessing' in a discussion in Sydney's west.

At one point, the headscarf-clad pair even demonstrated how to use a small stick called a 'sivaak' to hit 'disobedient' women.

The women, Reem Allouche and Atika Latifi, claimed to be quoting the Quran verse about wives that reads: 'leave them alone in sleeping places and beat them'.

But another Sydney Muslim, Silma Ihram, said the passage was taken out of context and it shows that reading the Quran should be left to experts, reports Sky News.

So am I to assume that unless you are a Koranic scholar, it is pointless to read the Koran as "reading the Koran should be left to experts".

I don’t need any expert to “interpret” how the koran (no upper case) tells Muslims to kill the infidels wherever they are.

Screw these so-called “islamic schoolars”, and anyone else associated with this filthy cult.

I’ll admit that my interpretation of the Koran and even non-expert Muslims’ interpretations are wrong.

My view of Islam has nothing to do with any line from the Koran or anyone’s interpretation of the line(s). I look at
* The way Islamic states treat women, gays, infidels, “other” Muslims.
* And how sharia courts rule.
* And what fatwas put out by “experts” say.
* And how large numbers of Muslims personally treat infidels, women, gays,....

It doesn’t matter if any of these follow anyone’s interpretation of the Koran. They are all real, daily actions attributed to Islam by the MANY individuals and governments doing the actions.

I don’t even need to focus on the tiny % of Muslims who carry out the worst terrorist attacks. Over 100 million Muslims and a large majority of Islamic governments behave every day in ways that I find deplorable.

In that case, the Koran is dangerous and should come with a warning label.

Three Things You Didn't Know About Islam

One thing which was surprising to me: If you read in the Quran, "Don't do A," and later read, "It's okay to do A," the later claim overrides the earlier claim.

Sounds like they're making it up as they go along.

Thank the Good Lord I don't have to be a scholar to read and understand His Holy Word. "Thou shall not kill" is about as simple and straight forward as it gets. Not much room for misinterpretation.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is voluntary female behavior. When it is not voluntary, it does not enjoy the protection of the law in our society, and no religion operating in our society gets a pass on beating women based on the religion’s scriptures.

Cecily, I'd like to say I agree with your statement, but it gets shipwrecked (or at least, caught on a reef) if the Muslim women say that in their case bondage and battery are voluntary, jut as much as that of the fictional "Anastasia Steele".

My own view is that some acts are objectively wrong, regardless of "consent." Put them in the "depraved heart" category of crime. Whether it's done to the "consenting" Anastasia Steele or the "consenting" Atika Latifi or Umm Bint-Anybody, it's reckless endangerment maybe, assault for sure.

There are some things you shouldn't legally be able to consent to. Among these: (forcible) rape, slavery, sodomy, torture, assault, murder.

Further to your point, when reading the Koran, there are different versions. One is ordered by the date of appearance of the verses. https://wikiislam.net/wiki/Chronological_Order_of_the_Qur%27an

This then leads to different interpretations when “A” is forbidden and then allowed or the other way round.

Thank you. This further reinforces my thought that the Muslims are making it up as they go along.

“claimed to be quoting the Quran verse about wives that reads: ‘leave them alone in sleeping places and beat them’.” Idiotic cowardly journalism, they didn’t “claim “ to be quoting from the koran they actually did quote from the koran. It’s in there. The other folks are just saying they took it out of context, just like the parts about killing the Jews and Christians.

We The People, therefore, Natural Born American Citizens should be the only ones capable in interpreting the Constitution. Like the part about invasion.

Muslims always say that. Everything is always "misinterpreted" and only the imam can explain the true meaning of the verses.

And everybody's imam has a different opinion...

Strange... The "sivaak" or "siwak" or a "miswak" is a stick used in Muslim countries to brush your teeth. They use it mainly because Mohammed used it and mentioned it often in the hadith. So basically, that means they are suggesting beating women with toothbrushes... XD

Yes.

I have often despaired over such things.

Natural Law, despised by leftists, shows that women want dominant men. Original Sin has perverted that womanly desire.

Hence: Good Girls loving Bad Boys.

It does not have to manifest as physical violence.

Do not listen to what women say; watch what women do (i.e., whom they choose as their romantic/sexual partners).

There is a reason for the saying, Nice Guys finish last.

Well, let’s put it this way: for the women who don’t volunteer for beatings and subjugation in our society, the law will protect them and is on their side. In majority Islamic societies or communities, not so much.
