President Trump didn’t declare war on Syria. He exercised his CIC powers properly in this instance as laid out in the War Powers Act.

The president should work with congress to declare war, otherwise say out of it.

Why have a president, just send everything into a committee.

Distinction without a difference. Congress approved Iraq.

Agreed. Kaine is actually right on something here.

The informal rule seems to be “one free bombing”, because this clearly wasn’t some sort of national emergency that couldn’t wait for Congress to convene and bless a war.

Let’s hope this was it, it is over with, and Trump hasn’t been turned uniparty neocon on us.

Molly Yard’s slogan, on anything a conservative, a Republican, a Christian, or any combination thereof might say or do, was, “I am OUTRAGED!” Your handle suggests she might have been kinfolk? What a way to go through life; promoting outrage.

Reductio ad absurdum. I’m sure you used the same “argument” when Obama and Clinton did it.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I think WWII was the last time. Korea and Nam, no. Iraq, no. They “authorized the use if force” in Kuwait and then Iraq and Afghanistan. IIRC.

To the best of my knowledge the last time congress actually declared war was WWII.

Wrong. After 9/11 (War on Terror) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both were authorized by Congress with official declarations sanctioning the use of military force.

The Iraq AUMF was a declaration of war in everything but explicit name.

I believe you are correct. Congress authorized the use of force. That is a declaration of war. Of course, we were already at war with Iraq, it was only a ceasefire that was changed. Technically we were only continuing the first Gulf War.

“Distinction without a difference. Congress approved Iraq.”

Nope. I believe the President should force congress to declare war, not some kind of police action like Korea.

Unconditional surrender needs to be the standard.

As I said, I actually almost agree with Kaine, force congress to declare war.
