Fed up with people speeding in your neighborhood? If you live in Menomonie, Wisconsin, theres a new effort you can be a part of to get drivers to slow down.
The Menomonie Police Department recently introduced a new program inviting citizens to help identify speeding vehicles and report them to the police.
The program is called Traffic Tamers. After completing training with the police department, volunteers can check out radar units to conduct their own speed watches in their neighborhood.
The volunteers, called tamers, work in pairs. One runs the radar unit to record the speed of the vehicle, while the other takes down the vehicles information. The information is turned over to a Menomonie Police Department crime prevention specialist, who then sends a letter to the driver reminding them of the speed limit and letting them know they were observed speeding.
Citizens interested in becoming part of the Traffic Tamers program can contact the Menomonie Police Department at 715-231-8504 or longb@menomonie-wi.gov.
“Are there any “good” names for people like this? “
If you had speeders running up and down the street you would not be concerned?
If you speed in my neighborhood, You better hope you don’t get caught.
Not by the cops. But by us residents.
Lucky- as the exit from a Hospital with stitches?
Lefty- as they get run over attempting to stop a oncoming car?
Zippy- as they run from an unhappy road Rager?
Oh man, the HOA Gestapo Agents just got a Position to aim for.
I wonder how long it will be before the local police start writing tickets based on Traffic Tamer information.
Exactly. With Officer Fife swearing under Oath he observed the violation in person.
Bank on It.
>>who then sends a letter to the driver reminding them of the speed limit and letting them know they were observed speeding.
Cool! So I can stop going to the drag strip to get time slips! The neighborhood snitch can help me see if my tune improved performance now.
Recipients of such a letter then respond to the po-po advising them that any evidence gathered in this fashion is inadmissible and inviting them to FO.
How is this program any different that what George Zimmerman was doing in his condo neighborhood one cold winter night when a certain Trayvon went thugging about?
I’m all for COP (Citizens on Patrol) type programs that foster healthy relations between cops and citizens. But everyone must know where the lines are. And know that you better not cross those lines.
Good answer. Thanks.
Sounds like one hell of a Lawsuit against these “private citizens” for Stalking and invasion of privacy.
There was a case in Georgia where a couple did this and was Criminally Charged with Stalking for complaining about a Police Car going 17mph over the speed limit on a Radar Gun, by their house.
[[If you had speeders running up and down the street you would not be concerned?]]
Sure, but i certainly wouldn’t pretend to be a human radar detector who knows what speed they are going if they are traveling close to the speed limit- I also would not trust people who can claim anything they like- what if they have a grudge against someone and falsely accuses them of speeding without any radar proof of speeding? this does not bode well when you have unqualified citizens turning people in based on guestimates-
Where do we apply?
I'm all for trying to reduce speeding through neighborhoods, but this doesn't sound like a good plan.
"Iam going to get all them SumBitches!"
What would prevent someone from getting radar on a car going 50 in a 50 zone, and then claiming with their 'spotter' (partner) that the person they don't like in the neighborhood was the one doing 50 in a 25?
This will end badly for Menominee with a major lawsuit filed against the City.
Well said.
