You can survive the occasional tactical blunder, but the wrong strategy spells eventual defeat.

“”international outrage””

The outrage is from who and in what countries? OR is it from the United Nations? Do we hear anything about the loss of life in Syria and elsewhere from the UN?

After all the time spent trying to take back that city and some countries are going to bitch about the loss of lives? Incredible!!

There is just no explanation for anything taking place in today’s world...

"Churchill was a madman, and the firebombing of Dresden was his revenge. It had nothing to do with war, it was simply a pleasure to kill women and children to him. He was as war hungry as Adolph ever could be."

You grabbed a really descriptive screen name. {;^)

More than that, they actively prevent them from leaving to ratchet up civilian casualties. Unwilling human shields you might say.

Pretty much what I said ...

When a military attacks a city civilians die, usually many civilians die. That is war. The only way to prevent that is to turn over the cities to whatever enemy wants them and ignore the enemies in a city. Then you will not have “collateral damage” though you will have whatever massacre the occupying forces choose to inflict. As long as the other side is doing it, it must be okay.

Obama’s airstrikes killed them in a good way because Obama is a proper leftist with such a concern for humanity.

Check his history, he reeks of villainy.

“Iraq? They wouldn’t give a ####. Must be getting pressure from the west to hold off a few days.”

They needed a pause. They have to revise their tactics, and staff back up.

They were making great progress, by pushing hard with a few elite units - but some of them have suffered heavy casualties in the process. Progress also ground to a crawl when they reached the dense warren of streets and alleys of this ancient major city’s “old town”. They need an excuse to pull their troops back from the meatgrinder, and find another way to starve or smoke out ISIS from Old Town.

They will probably give them a chance to escape, and might end up just sending in lots of the Shi’ite militiamen to root them out at close range.

Iraq will be better off after the war with stronger security forces and weaker militias.

The 9th Division has closed in to the NW edge of Mosul, so they could open a new front, and spend some time clearing more of the modern city, besieging the Old Town for a while.
