History moves in cycles. The plague of political correctness and assaults on free speech that erupted in the 1980s and were beaten back in the 1990s have returned with a vengeance. In the United States, the universities as well as the mainstream media are currently patrolled by well-meaning but ruthless thought police, as dogmatic in their views as agents of the Spanish Inquisition. We are plunged once again into an ethical chaos where intolerance masquerades as tolerance and where individual liberty is crushed by the tyranny of the group.
The premier principles of my new book, Free Women, Free Men, are free thought and free speechopen, mobile, and unconstrained by either liberal or conservative ideology. The liberal versus conservative dichotomy, dating from the split between Left and Right following the French Revolution, is hopelessly outmoded for our far more complex era of expansive technology and global politics. A bitter polarization of liberal and conservative has become so extreme and strident in both the Americas and Europe that it sometimes resembles mental illness, severed from the common sense realities of everyday life.
My dissident brand of feminism is grounded in my own childhood experience as a fractious rebel against the suffocating conformism of the 1950s, when Americans, exhausted by two decades of economic instability and war, reverted to a Victorian cult of domesticity that limited young girls aspirations and confined them (in my jaundiced view) to a simpering, saccharine femininity....

Women can’t express themselves?
Really?
Camille, is there any chance we could get you to shut up? Didn’t think so...
Well Camille, you chose sides. And right now the free speech problem is a plague sponsored by your socialist friends. I’m trying to think back when there was a suppression of free thought and speech coming from the right. I can recollect no such time.
You’re a smart girl. We all recognize that. But you should see that the thing you’re fighting is embedded deeply within your socialist philosophy. You cannot erase a major pillar of that philosophy without bringing it down. You can yell and scream all you like at your comrades and you will accomplish nothing. But it is fun watching you try.
I can’t be too critical of Paglia because she’s schooling the academic tyrants on freedom of speech.
I recognize she’s a leftist on many fronts, but this time she’s telling the pink hat crowd they are spouting nonsense.
You are missing her point. She is complaining about the absence of free speech on campus by (her words) ‘Stalinist” administrators and (her words) “damaged women with bitter grudges against men” i.e. anti-male feminists. When liberals seek to suppress free speech they are suppressing free speech for men and women both.
Surprisingly she is on “our” side...
OMG you made me spit on my computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Camille Paglia: Women Arent Free Until Speech Is”
...which may explain why the Left is so he11-bent on suppressing free speech: they can’t “fight for women’s rights” if women are “free”, which apparently hinges on freedom of speech. Ergo, those who derive their purpose & prosperity from protests cannot allow achievement of the declared goal, and so must subvert critical paths thereto - lest they work themselves out of a job.
See tagline.
Ah, I see: the Liberal is getting mugged by her own, and so is starting to discover Conservatism. A long way to go, yes, but starting to realize what the Right has been defending and trying to tell her for decades.
I don't think Paglia has ever been totally lockstep with the left.
I hope she doesn't shut up. I enjoy her. She's very good on a host of issues.
I’ve been watching Paglia and Alan Dershowtz these days. They’ll both be conservatives before too long. Their clear thinking is kicking in.
What are "we" accomplishing by yakking in an echo chamber? At least she has a platform. She teaches. She writes. Her thoughts get out there. I appreciate any voice of reason that can gain some attention. No, she won't change the world, but she will get some people to think alternatively. She's one of a few that are brave enough to speak out. She takes on the left. She takes on the stifling of free speech at universities. She sticks up for men all the time. I like all that. Yay for Camille!
Camille.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan and have been for a long time. She is smart enough to be a Freeper and it just pains me that she is such a Lefty.
But there are times as in this case that she is on the mark and effectively on our side. My only real point was that she is just beating her head against the wall. Fun to watch. Better if you can listen to her speak (imagine what a machine gun would sound like if it tried to speak English.)
lol...I know she’s rapid fire. Her mind goes a million miles an hour.
And I don’t get the lefty part of her either, but I’ll take the parts that I do like and applaud her for it.
Did you even read the article?
She’s an interesting one.
Women and men are having the range of our free speech reduced daily by the politically correct left.
Women aren’t supposed to be free. There are to have the illusion of freedom while being dependent on the government.
“Im trying to think back when there was a suppression of free thought and speech coming from the right. I can recollect no such time”.
You’re right, there has been no such time.
PROGRESSIVE = REPRESSIVE
The Left always has been and always will be repressive.
Okay, then I didn’t read deep enough.
Thanks for the correction.
