Immigration provision cut from Obamacare rollback, angering conservatives

Some conservatives in Washington were fuming on Tuesday after an Obamacare rollback bill was tweaked by Republican leaders to delete a provision meant to crack down on illegal immigrants getting federal healthcare insurance coverage.

The development posed another problem for Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives and President Donald Trump, who are trying to win congressional approval of the wider bill, the first big legislative test for Trump since taking office.

The provision would have allowed the Treasury Department to access data at the Department of Homeland Security to verify that healthcare tax credits went only to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents, not to illegal immigrants.

In a largely procedural move, it was dropped from the bill after the Senate Parliamentarian determined that the Senate Finance Committee, which handles tax credits under the bill, does not have purview over the Department of Homeland Security.

Republican Representative Lou Barletta issued a statement on Monday evening, after the change was made, saying he could no longer support the bill, citing the obscure provision.

Ryan and Trump got in a hurry and got sloppy.

This needs to be fixed before the vote.

No, Ryan meant for that to happen.

Jury still out on Trump since they have brought in Gorelick to the family.

Ought to be fairly easy now. Attach a copy of the police report of the 14 year old girl to the law. Someone will find a way

This is my hope, from my impressions:
Trump has said many times that Obamacare will implode in 2017.
He has also said several times that the politically “smart” thing to do would be to let it fail. Then the Dems would come begging.
Well, let it pass the House, let it die in the Senate.
Blame the Dems for failure and wait for implosion.
Repubs and Trump skate, they tried.
Dems come crawling?

Watch for a delay in the vote. You put a vote date out there to make people move to a deal. If no deal, delay. A few days and another Trump trip to the Capitol and a change to the Bill and bang done

Wait. Just wait. I can already think of TWO solutions.

1. Ram an amendment through the “proper” committee and attach that to the bill.

2. Get the Senate to commit to putting it in their version of the bill. Adopt that provision in the joint Conference Committee.

There are ways to fix this snafu.

This should be getting better, but is getting worse.

“This should be getting better, but is getting worse.”

Yeah, it’s starting to look like how the Dims passed the original bill.

And I don’t like it.

The o ly problem is-—and I don’t think any of us here know-—they may have archane rules as to what amendment you can attach to a reconciliation bill.

“No, Ryan meant for that to happen.”

Absolutely!! He’s always been pro-immigration. How he suckered Trump into this travesty is a mystery.

For me, when it comes to Trump, I’m afraid it’ll soon be a case of the bloom being off the rose. The healthcare bill. Jamie Gorelick. Ivanka having access to classified information. None of this is why we hired him.
