DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Public school advocates are suing to block the state of Michigan from helping private schools with the cost of complying with state requirements such as immunization reporting and safety drills. The lawsuit will be filed later Tuesday in the Court of Claims. The Michigan Association of School Boards and groups representing school administrators and others said at a news conference that spending $2.5 million in the current state budget on nonpublic schools is unconstitutional.

This kind of thing grates on my nerves. We ALL pay property taxes and so much of the taxes DO go to the schools. They need to shut up, teach what they are supposed to, and stop their complaining.

Remember to look for..., the Union Label.

Allowing unions to enter our schools was a massive mistake.

So they are trying to block non public schools from state aid for immunizations and safety drills?
Seems reasonable/sarc off.

Dollars to donuts they aren’t concerned with Muslim prayer rooms on school campuses.

So homeschoolers, who fund all their materials themselves thus saving the states millions of dollars, should sue to be able to subtract the money they spend from the public school taxes which they are forced to pay.

Unions protecting their rice bowls.

Public employee unions should be illegal.

state requirements such as immunization reporting and safety drills.

It seems to me that immunization reporting should cost basically nothing - email a file to the relevant agency - and the school should be holding safety drills regardless of state requirements.

No sympathy with the government schools or their unions, but how about not always begging for money.

True government in the USA: Dream it up, find an ACLU type lawyer, find a liberal judge, make it so.

Elections are so yesterday (unless the leftists win, then they are sacrosanct).

It has destroyed K-12 education.

Shakespeare had a line in one of this plays, “.....first kill all the lawyers...” It has been widely misinterpreted from his original intent and has become the lore of the ills of lawyers with which many people agree. Regardless this more demeaning context is what is widely held.

In that light, I would rather this newfound sentiment be changed to “judges” rather than lawyers, myself. My opinion is that until today’s judges actually get soldiers to enforce their extra-Constitutional edicts, they should be ignored.

Solution to this problem:

ELIMINATE compulsory government school attendance.

Make the government schools compete for students based on merit, not head count.

Yep, watched it play out here over and over. Unions are ruthless, at the expense of kids.

I agree. I did the math a few years ago and concluded that - even allowing for the "lost" property taxes for church property - just ONE typical Catholic school of 300 students will save the state pretty much the entire $2.5 million these people are quibbling about, based on the cost-per-student of public schools.

The problem with private schools getting public money is that they also accept regulations. It gets tougher to expel students. They won’t be able to refuse students with needs they can’t meet. What’s the point of a private school if it sells its soul to the gov?
