Opponents of the newly revived federal plan to store nuclear waste at Nevadas Yucca Mountain are preparing for battle with the Trump administration as the political winds seem to be shifting in favor of the project.
Powerful figures in Nevada led by Republican Sen. Dean Heller and including freshman Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, and Gov. Brian Sandoval have vowed to fight the White House at every turn as it tries to breathe new life into Yucca Mountain with the first injection of federal funds into what surely would be a multi-billion dollar undertaking.
But none of those political figures, analysts say, carry the same weight as former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who successfully lobbied the Obama administration to kill the project six years ago and made opposition to the plan a cornerstone of his political career.
The coming Yucca fight provides Heller with an opportunity to demonstrate his value to Nevada and by extension, improve his 2018 [re-election] prospects, said David Damore, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. However, he is not well positioned within the Senate, and the fact that he was not even told that funding for the project was in Trumps proposed budget before it was released does not bode well and suggests that he is on the outside.

It is about time that all of the fuel rods sitting in cooling ponds and other nuclear waste is gotten into a safe storage in Yucca Mountain. One of the possible terrorist plans could be to blow up on of the cooling pond sites that are next to the nuclear reactors and thus spread radiation as an improvised dirty bomb.
Well said...It blows me away when these jerks in NV scream about finding a safe place for nuclear waste storage.
The cooling ponds you mention are a real danger at the various nuclear sites.
Lastly, there couldn’t be a safer place than underground in the wastelands of the NV desert.

Next time, vote for Trump, jerkweeds.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Yucca Mountain lies on a trans-San Andreas fault line!
I’ll go with the scientists. It should be stored in one location rather than all over the US.
Either way I expect rino Heller to lose in 18’-that’s good.
One location is agreeable, but those “scientists” failed to mention the pesky little fact that Yucca lies on the trans-San Andreas fault line the first time around.
We feel those earthquakes in Vegas from time to time.
Wrong!
Show us a map where it shows the San Andreas fault in Nevada.
Yucca is a better temporary solution than the cooling pond method.
