Syria launched antiaircraft missiles Friday at Israeli jets returning home from a bombing run over central Syria, marking a serious escalation between the two Middle East foes.
In a rare communique, in which Israel took responsibility for the usually clandestine airstrikes, the Israeli Air Force confirmed that its warplanes had struck several targets in neighboring Syria.

Reading this article, it’s tough to figure out how it’s Syria that’s escalating the situation. The legally elected Syrian gov that didn’t invite Israel’s military to operate in their country is supposed to NOT respond?
Assad is fighting ISIS inside Syria.
Hamas is fighting against Assad and Hezbollah inside Syria.
Hamas is fighting Israel inside “Palestine.”
Israel is bombing Hezbollah (or even Assad!) inside Syria.
That’s messed up.
MiddleEast war is never neat. Moslems are either quiescent because they have no resources to wage war and larger infidel countries control most of them or they are unified in a conquering wave or they are lashing out in all directions against each other.
Sounds like some raghead camel jock manning an AA site woke up feeling froggy; might be his LAST wakeup!
The legally elected government (hahaha) is not really a funny assessment of the leadership of the Bashar Klan. But since you see it that way, did they not align themselves Israel’s avowed enemy Iran and allow them access to the Golon making those attacks necessary?
DEBKA suggests in its post on this matter that the Arrow system had to be employed on incoming missiles threatening Israel itself, not anti-aircraft missiles.
Three missiles were hit with two crashing in Israel according to DEBKA and one in Jordan.
Warning sirens went off at 3am this morning as the Arrows shot the missiles out of the sky.
What’s the end game of Israel aligning with the Saudi and Qatari backed jihadists who have been fighting Assad and his allies like Hezbollah, the Iranians and the Russians?
Peter Hitchens in columns calls the anti-Assad forces jiahdists, al Qaeda, and Osama Bin Laden admirers.
John McCain and the Neocons are jihadist allies as we already know.
But do the Saudis and Qataris hope for Israeli flexibility on the Palestinians in exchange for their fight to take out Syria as an Iranian base to attack Israel?
Is the end game Iran gets beat up followed by the two-state solution in Israel with thousands, yea tens of thousands of Jews forced out of Judaea and Samaria to accommodate the Palestinian state?
Sounds fair.
Israeli aircraft in Syrian airspace are fair game.
Of course, the Israelis are fully entitled to shoot back...
An example of fake news using facts. It is not an escalation. It is business as usual. The WaPo just can’t report a story straight.
The Syrian government is legally recognized. Not the same as freely elected.
Assad is one of the biggest buyers of ISIS oil, Assad helped create ISIS and allowed Jihadists to attack US and coalition forces during the Iraq war; Bush almost expanded the war into Syria; he probably should have.
And indeed the primary mission might have been Israelis evaluating Syrian defenses, especially if it’s thought the something new or improved has been added to the Syrian military.
“Thats messed up.”
Most definitely. There is no “lesser of two evils” side in Syria right now.
The only possible redeeming thing about Assad is that he’s promised to protect Christians in Syria and by all accounts, they’ve thrown their lot in with him. But Assad’s friends (Iran, Hezbollah) are an entirely different matter. Israel is most concerned about Hezbollah’s growing influence in Syria.
If you have time, you should read this article about how Hezbollah threatens Israel, check this out:

It’s a bit of a longer read but it never gets boring.
I’ll never side with the Assads, they helped kill 250 US Marines in ‘ 83and they’ve done more to create ISIS as anyone;
I don’t buy the Iranian/Russian prop line on this.
John McCains gets a hard on when it looks like we can go to war.
Many Christians are against Assad including opposition leader George Sabra.

And a Lebanese civil war? Syria attacked Lebanon, a Christian nation back then, Daddy Assad.
I gave up even trying to keep up. It’s like a rugby match with six teams on the field.
No. If Israel isn’t going to focus on one thing....disintegrating ISIS, they’re not helping. If Assad falls, ISIS has a corridor to the Med.
Syria funds and equips Hezbollah in Lebanon, which has proved to be a danger to Israel.
Israel seems to think that it would be better served by a complete collapse of Syria, than it would by a working Syrian state of any sort. They might be right.
But the rest of world’s interests are better served by a functional Syrian government (preferably Assad, and not an Islamic ‘Republic’).
So Israel and pretty much the rest of world are at counterpoints on this.
There’s been something going on for the last however many years starting with the street revolt in Iran in 2009 followed by the Arab Spring revolts-revolutions ending in Syria, then the Syrian Civil War with Assad backed by Russia.
Then comes the street revolt in Ukraine.
Here’s an FR post related to that as published by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper.
It talks about an ex-Israel Defense Forces solider helping to overthrow the pro-Russian government in Ukraine with the consequences that followed that.
