Iranian boats in "unsafe" encounter with U.S. surveillance ship

Iranian military vessels had a close encounter with a U.S. surveillance ship on Saturday in what U.S. officials tell CBS News was both an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” maneuver by the Iranians in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

CBS News’ David Martin reports that the USNS Invincible, which is outfitted with sonar to track submarines and radar to monitor missile tests, was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was forced to change its course to avoid a small group of Iranian Revolutionary Guard fast boats that had positioned themselves in front of her.

The “unsafe” encounter came just two days after an Iranian navy frigate came within 150 yards of the Invincible in the Gulf of Oman, just south of the Strait of Hormuz...

I bet the ROE has been changed.
Iran better think twice before pushing the outside of the envelope.

What the hell has happened to our “so called” military? A warship turning around some hostile small boats. It’s simply EMBARRASSING! Political correctness will soon cause the lives of many of our servicemen without a single shot being fired from our side.

“In May of 2016, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz to the United States and its allies if they “threaten” the Islamic Republic.”

Sounds like their trying to provoke an incident so they can justify closing the straits.

I’d like to hear about one of these boats/planes being blasted into bite-sized chunks. Why are we not blasting them into funsize bars?

When is the President going to give some time to foreign policy and making an example out of either Iran or North Korea? They are both giving him ample opportunities.

‘their’ should be ‘they’re’. I hate when I mess up like that!

That was a tracking ship. Do they have weapons on board?

Probably not, she is USNS and her crew are civil service mariners.

The ship appears to lack mounted guns.

If I was the commanding officer, I think securing a chain gun, or some small anti-tank missiles would be high on my list. At least some 50’s...

Surprised they didn’t have any escorts, or at least call in some planes to buzz the bad guys.

Also, by changing course you find out their intent.

For example, we change course, and they do too. The American captain would immediately notify the fleet and our planes would be on alert.

One thing Trump probably has told them, is we will not let these people apprehend us.

“was both an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” “

Our top Sailors and Air Force guys always use that term. It sounds so pussified and gay. They sound scared by something ballsy.
I cant imagine Chester Nimitz using that term.

I have not doubt that the ROE have changed on the sea as well as the land and the air.

Why in the hell didn’t they shoot the damn boats out of the water. Better still ram them.

The USNS Invincible was traveling in formation with 3 warships of the Royal Navy. She may have been under the tactical command of the Brit Commodore. From what I have read, she is a missile tracking ship. Her tracking radars belong to the U.S. Air force. Her operational mission may be under the control of the AF.

I am surprised that we haven’t come up with some form of deniable sabotage for small vessels like this that harass ships in shipping lanes.
