Given the choice, patients will reach for cannabis over prescribed opioids

Caption -- New research suggests people with chronic pain would rather use cannabis over their recommended medicine.

Chronic pain sufferers and those taking mental health meds would rather turn to cannabis instead of their prescribed opioid medication, according to a new study.

"This study is one of the first to track medical cannabis use under the new system of licensed producers, meaning that all participants had physician authorization to access cannabis in addition to their prescription medicines," says UBC Assoc. Prof. Zach Walsh, co-author of the study.

The study tracked more than 250 patients with prescribed medical cannabis--people treated for conditions such as chronic pain, mental health and gastrointestinal issues. Overall, 63 per cent of respondents reported using cannabis instead of their prescription drugs, which included opioids (to treat pain), benzodiazepines (sedatives) and anti-depressants.

Study lead Philippe Lucas is vice-president of Patient Research and Access at Tilray, a federally authorized medical cannabis production and research company, and a doctoral student at the University of Victoria Centre for Addictions Research of BC. Lucas suggests the main reasons for the switch to cannabis from prescribed meds is due to reduced side effects, better symptom management and a feeling that cannabis is safer than prescription drugs.

Walsh goes on to suggest cannabis may have an important role to play in addressing the problematic use of pharmaceutical medications such as opioids.

In 2001, Canada became one of the first nations to develop a program to allow access to cannabis for medical purposes. As of August 2016 more than 30 federally authorized licensed producers of cannabis provided product to more than 65,000 patients.

"Further research into how well cannabis works compared to the accepted front-line treatments is warranted," says Walsh. "Additionally, long-term research into the potential impact of the cannabis substitution on the quality of patient's lives is ongoing."

The study, published in International Journal of Drug Policy, was funded by Tilray.

Big Pharma hasn’t produced a better anti-nausea alternative to cannabis for chemo therapy patients.

Well the list of many opioid side effects include severe constipation, skin irritation including severe itching, drowsiness, stomach cramps, plus you can die from overdose.

The side effects from good smoke are a sense of happiness and a case of the screamin' munchies... Well, at least that is what I hear...

Facts and reason don’t apply to the legion of tyrants who would throw these people in jail for smoking weed but have no problem with them being zombified by pharmaceutical heroin substitutes.

It’s been almost 40 years since I smoked weed, but I don’t remember it being a pain killer.

Longer for me but I was in my teens and what was pain back then.

Now I have a nerve disease that is 24/7 pain level 7-8 for me. 9 pain pills/9 other pill/3 other pills daily to control muscle contractions and pain.

Started using a triple hit pipe twice a day and now I have cut these meds in a third. Weed works and other than having the munchies all is good. Just gotta hide the grub.

Oh, started wearing tie dyed clothing and bell bottoms but I do not think anybody notices when I get off my horse.

My son has fibromyalgia. It is absolutely debilitating in a major flare up. dr gave him one of these meds you see advertised on TV, absolutely messed him up. Darned near cost him his job. Now he is on a lower powered drug and uses MJ in the evening to let him sleep. Does much better.

The hypocracy of the Feds to not even look at medical benefits of MJ while approving drugs that have horrible side effects is astounding.

I helped with development of methods and equipment used in fda test..I can say that it appears the gangsta mint of the past was more interested in enslaving folks through need for drugs at a high price instead of allowing back yard solutions that folks could have freely..they would rush through things , they wanted me to certify the results regardless of outcome,..I smell payoffs..just my opinion

Same - I hear it is much more potent these days. May not kill pain but make one not as aware of it....man.

It’s not any good on pain, it gets you high, and you forget how much pain you are in. I’ll drink a couple glasses of wine, or a couple scotch and water, and get pain relief. Blood sugar shows that up though. Even 1 beer is more pain relief than a reefer.
